"Capriati upset in quarterfinals at Filderstadt tennis
October 12, 2001
FILDERSTADT, GERMANY (TICKER) -- Jennifer Capriati's string of
disappointing results at the $565,000 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix continued
Capriati, the second seed, failed to take advantage of her one-set lead,
falling to Sandrine Testud of France in the quarterfinals, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Testud will meet No. 6 Justine Henin in Saturday's semifinals, while No. 1
Martina Hingis will battle No. 3 Lindsay Davenport.
Capriati fell in her first quarterfinals appearance here in five attempts. The
American suffered second-round exits in 1996 and 1999, and first-round
eliminations in 1997 and 2000.
By contrast, Testud won the 1998 Filderstadt title and reached the semifinals
the following year.
The winner of this year's Australian and French Opens, Capriati lost to
Testud for the first time in three meetings in 2001. The 25-year-old handled
Testud in straight sets in the round of 16 at the German Open claycourt
event in May and Wimbledon in July.
Testud will try to capture her fourth career WTA title. The 29-year-old lifted
her third trophy last month, when she defeated Henin in the final of the Big
Island Championships at Waikoloa, Hawaii."
Is Jennifer losing her mental game?
