Right exactly now, as in today? She was better then. But she's been better than the 96 OZ at various times during 2001 and 2002.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

She might have been better when she got to the final of RG, or a few other times.

At the same time, she's never been more then say 75% what she was before 93, after 93...

I think Monica is just as good now as she was in '96. Her fitness wasn't the greatest back then, nor as it is now.

I think the biggest difference is the quality of competition from now and then... she was beating people like Anke, Iva, Amanda, Conchita in the QFs and SFs of slams... and today, those players would struggle to be in the top 10.

She's a technically better player w/more control. Whether that translates to a better player or not....?

i think monica said.....

....that she feels she's a better player now than in years gone by.

i've always thought monica's biggest problem was the competition, and not her fitness. like somebody pointed out, she had to beat chanda rubin and anke huber to win australia in 1996. now, she'd probably have a much tougher road.

She's better as a player now, but mentally she's not as confident...

I think if she was able to play two weeks in a row without being tired and with some energy to play the decisive rounds? She was better than she is today

She's about the same. But in 2001 and 2002, she was better than in 1996. RG 2000 should have been hers.

But she's never been the same as far as speed goes. She was never a speed demon, even before the stabbing, but she always got to the ball quickly and had lots of time to set up. Her speed was very under-rated back then.

FUCK YOU, SEWTA.

I agree that Monica is better now , especially in 2001 and 2002, than in 1996.

Problem is that competition is ALSO much better now than in 1996.

If Monica had not been a victum in that incident in Germany earlier, she would have eclipsed Steffi, with her accomplishments. She is STILL a player that you better bring your "A" game if you want to win.

monica was suffering from a bad shoulder injury in 96 and still won. I think that is impossible now.(not only for monica but pretty much for all players)

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night
