What a shock...the Aussie Open champ gets POM honors...
Serena Earns WTA Player Of The Month Award
By Tennis Week
The women's tennis calendar belongs to Serena Williams so it comes as no surprise the Australian Open champion was selected Player of the Month for January by the International Tennis Writers’ Association.
It marks the sixth time the top-ranked Williams has been selected by ITWA for the monthly award since the program’s inception in January 2001. Williams earned the honor five times last year, which was more than any other player.
Last month, Williams completed the "Serena Slam" by beating older sister Venus, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4 in the Australian Open final to capture her fourth consecutive Grand Slam crown.
The 21-year-old Williams became the fifth woman to hold all four majors simultaneously, joining Margaret Court, Maureen Connolly, Martina Navratilova, and Steffi Graf. She also became the ninth woman to have won each of the four Grand Slam singles titles.
After winning the Australian Open, Serena's total number of weeks as the No. 1 in the world stretched to 30 weeks, the seventh longest time at the top. Serena also teamed with Venus to win the Australian Open doubles title.
