Do you think Justine Henin-Hardenne has gotten ridden of her title as a choker?
Well, everyone remembers Roland Garros 2001 semis when Justine had 6-2 3-1 40-15 against Kim Clijsters to get to the finals but ended up losing 6-2 5-7 3-6.
Everyone also remembers when Justine had Venus beat in Amelia Island 2002 when she had 6-2 4-0 41-15 and eventually lost 6-2 5-7 6-7.
She was definitely a choker back then, but recently, Justine has gotten a little better closing out the big matches.
It started last year in the Berlin final when she beat Serena 6-2 1-6 7-6, a very close match Justine was able mentally to close up.
Yes, Justine still had some problems after that losing to Daniilidou in S'Hertogenbosch after having match points, letting Rippner take her to a third set in Wimbledon, and maybe even losing to Davenport at Zurich (?) 7-6 7-6 after having some leads.
Then this year, everyone saw Justine beat Lindsay Davenport 7-5 5-7 9-7 in a mentally grueling match. Sure, Justine had Lindsay up 4-2 in the second and a game point to go up 5-2, but the important thing is that justine came from two breaks down in the third set and cramps to win the match. Thus, this match was definitley a plus to her mentally.
Than in Dubai, Justine beat Jennifer Capriati 7-5 4-6 6-4 in the semis and then Monica Seles 4-6 7-6 7-5 in the final after saving a match point. These were obviously very close matches, and Justine didn't let herself let them go.
And now I want to know what you think, is Justine still a choker?
I still she still has a little bit of that choking ability in her, but it has improved at least 80%. And who knows, in the future, maybe Justine will have a "Serena" and win that one match, like Serena did at the Canadian Open 2001. Or maybe, that match has already occured, either in the Aussie Open or in Dubai.
