Indian Wells - How will the announce team handle it?

No Venus or Serena this year at IW. No surprise. How will the announcers handle it?

a) Not mention either of them or their absence

b) Mention them, but NOT why they aren't there

c) Bring up the IW 2001 semis and finals ONCE, and say 'race has nothing to do with it'

d) Talk about it off and on for two weeks, and say 'race had nothing to do with it'

e) actually mention race as a possible factor in the crowd reaction

REMEMBER....

I'm NOT asking what YOU believe.
I'm NOT asking you what YOU think the announcers SHOULD do.

I'm asking for a prediction. What do you think the announcers WILL do? How will they (if at all) comment on the absence of the Williams sisters.

I'm interested in your ability to foresee the future, not your opinion on a tennis crowd from 2 years ago

I'd say, mention their absence, mention 2001, but dodge the issue of the crowd's motivation as much as possible. If pressed, they'll refer to people being mad that Venus pulled out of the semis, and they might even say the crowd was unfair or harsh, but the "R" word (forget whether it was or wasn't a factor) will be avoided at all costs.

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

Who cares, this is a non issue. The ESPN announcers talked about this issue last year, get over it.

If its such a non issue then why do announcers still talk about it? Also they will talk about it at the tournament as well. Or do you think no one will wonder why the number one and two players in the world, who are american, are skipping a top american tournament?

I think they should keep it on the downlow and not mention it specifically. Hey, everyone now knows what happened and why the two Sisters are not there. Concentrate instead on the players who are there.

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!
SERENA PRINCESS OF POWER

Victoria Duval - coming to a slam near you
Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

Why would they mention players who aren't playing? Regardless of the rights and wrongs of it, the sensible marketing/PR approach is to be positive about what you have, not be defensive about what's missing.

Hang on, what do you mean by "the announcers" Volcana? Do you mean the people who announce the tournament (i.e. the tournament's marketing/PR people who write press releases, put material on the web site and in brochures, etc) or do you mean the sports commentators covering it on TV? In my first para above, I assumed that you meant the former. If you mean the latter, they'll say all sorts of things, I imagine.

They did talk about it because Richard Williams made the issue alot larger than most people there said it was. Venus and Serena skip alot of tournments in the US, but mainly the summer hardcourt events.

jouissant - I meant the latter. The talking heads we see on TV.

yukon145 - Glad it's not an issue for you. I'm interested however, so I'll keep bringing it up. Just ignore my threads.

Oh be quiet.. the crowd was horrible!!!!! it was totally uncalled for what the crowd did... and good for the sisters to stay away.. All the other players are happy now, knowing that the 6th Grand Slam is up for grabs.. knowing that the other 5, Australian,French,Wimbledon,US Open and**nasdaq** are out of reach.

"I told her, `You don't want to get into a hitting battle with Sharapova, because it would be uneven for Sharapova, because Sharapova only has one good side and that's her backhand,"'. "`You don't want to get into that for the simple reason you would win. So try to hit some balls to her strong side, to her backhand, and that would help you with your match for tomorrow

Option "D" will be used by the commentators because it is just too juicy to mention just once that V&S are not present at their desert shindig.

They will talk about it as long as the Williams don't show up for Indian Wells. The commentators are very messy, they like to gossip about people. Damn Gossip Folks!!!!! LOL

i believe they deserved it, I mean if I'd pay that much amount of money and the supposed to be the best match didn't happen I'd get really angry. At least show on court.
Anyway, I don't think the announcers will NOT comment at all about the Williams sisters. I don't see them saying "Allthough we had a loss of the 1# and 2# in the world, we had a great tournament".
Although I believe that if Venus and Serena showed up sometime again in the future, they'd earn the respect they deserve and if they behave correctly (as they usually do) they will gain the crowds confidence again. they just have to try and see!

The mere fact that you say they as if serena did anything wrong at all tells me where youre coming from.

I think they will mention what happened (because everyone is not in the know) and they will STRESS that RACE was indeed a factor in the Williams unwillingness to participate.

They will further, go on to abmonish the behavior that was displayed by the crowd and will continue to press the Tournament Management to make a public apology and PLEA for the return of the Williams.

This is afterall the land of the free and we are open to one another......aren't we?
