Certain players need to stop ignoring the Tier IV & V events.

Some players should suck up their pride and relinquish a couple of those pay to appear events and enter these tournaments in order to gain experience by playing deeper in the tourney, increasing their confidence and finally, possibly winning a precious tour title.

A few of the principle characters who would benefit from this decision are:

Alexandra Stevenson
Anna Kournikova
Elena Dementieva
Natalie Dechy (try for a 2nd title)

Some of these players are meeting up with the top ten in the 2nd round of higher tier events and are getting eliminated early, so it would behove them to more seriously consider the tier IV & V events in order to help enhance their careers.

But, greed and pride are tough vices for some players to cast aside, so we can expect to see some of the previously mentioned players to continue to go titleless in their mediocre careers.

I agree that Anna should play the lesser tournies... but I disagree on the others. If Elena D's goal is to be Top 15 her entire career, then she should play and win the little tournies. If she wants to be Top 10 or better, she has to play in the big tournies, and play the top players. Win or lose, the experience she gets from them will help much more than only beating lesser players that she handles routinely in the early rounds of bigger tournies.

Elena needs a win more than Ann does because she hasn't been a major factor in a GS event since 2000.

Anna already tried playing lower tier events, and that did not give her the elusive title. Anna needs to stop getting busy with Enrique. She will be remembered as a flop if she never wins a Grand Slam singles title or becomes a regular winner on tour.

The idea of playing low tier tournaments is good and has always been discussed. I used to think that players ranked outside the top 10 should play those tournaments because in tier 2 and above, they will meet someone tough and lose early.

But that advice isn't good for everyone, the problem is, I think, if a player like Anna plays a low tier tournament, she is supposed to win, and that adds extra preasure. Nobody would now expect Anna to win a tier 2 and in fact, her only good performances in the past two years have been in tier 2s. She did get to the finals in Shanghai but that was seen as a failure, while if she gets to the semis of a tier 2 it is an achievement.

I totally agree. It would boost the popularity of these events, some of who struggle to get crowds. Overall, the tour would benefit because more money would be raised(by the increased crowds) in these lesser tournaments. Tier II's on up already get those crowds anyway. Plus, they can gain confidence and mature at a good rate. Finally, I think this pressure to win is good for the players so that they can learn to handle it...That way, when they've matured and start winning a lot, they'll know how to handle this pressure...

Anna and Alex are Gold Exempt players. They can only play but so many Tier III's and IV's.

Abierto Mexicano de Tenis is a tier 3 and stevenson just played a tier 3 in memphis. but they don't play these sort of tournaments often enough.

i think until they win one or 2 titles they should player these loer tier tournaments because for players like anna k and elena d i think it is confidence that stops them from beating the top 10er's.

stevenson should be playing them all the time until she gets really consistent. until i see a string of 5 or 6 tournaments where she makes it to the semis or higher (in tier 4 and 5's - competition is easier) then i won't think that she is a top player.

Go the aussies! stosur!!!
and good luck russians: dementieva, safina, kirilenko, sharapova, kuznetsova, bovina, zvonareva, dushevina.

also good luck to: azarenka, lucic, sprem, vakulenko, vaidisova, safarova, ivanovic, groenefeld, mirza, krajicek, kvitkova, larcher de brito, lisicki.

It seems right now that most Tier I and II events have so few "top ten" players but the rest of the field is crowded with above average players "ranked 11-25".

I think some of those 11-25 should play some smaller events (like Farina Elia did this week) even if they are Gold Exempt. You can ask for permission from the tour and they usually grant you to "play down" an event.

Tee Rexx very good post. I actually agree with you. I just started a thread about one of the four you mentioned who could benefit from playing Tier IV and V.

Tee what is happening to us? We have agreed on the two last threads of yours that I responded too.

Yeah, some of those Tier Is and IIs have gotten so competitive. Remember how Daniilidou, a Top 25 player, had to play qualifying for two weeks in a row last fall?

I agree that the 11-25 crowd could benefit from playing a IV or V event. Especially Alexandra and Elena D. If they could win one title, no matter how small, it would help their confidence.
