She's back!

She seemed a bit rusty during the first few games but that was to be expected after such a long break

I'm just glad she's back, shame we couldn't see the match.

Better than I expected, this being her first match after her injury.

No streams for this and Petra's matches. What a mess.

Re: Carlsbad R2: (1)Victoria Azarenka d. Francesca Schiavone 6-2, 6-3

My review of the match. Azarenka vs. Schiavone

Set 1: 6-2
The match starts with the happy-birthday chants by some elderly fans for Azarenka. She waved in acknowledgement. Schiavone started out great, good first serve, and amazing net play. They both offer variety in the first three games, some nice exchange of volleys at the net. Though, Azarenka stepped up a gear, and was quick to run down the drop volleys and drop shots Schiavone hit, and hit passing-shot winners after another to break Schiavone's serve. The crowd want the upset, and they love Schiavone and want her to break back. But Azarenka keeps hitting to Schiavone backhand, and sometimes follows up to volley. And although Schiavone came up with some great backhand passing shots, and got a chance to break back, Azarenka always came up with good serves, mostly to Schiavone's backhands. Schiavone lost her temper in the next service game and hit a ball out of the stadium. Code violation was given. Azarenka was the one to keep it cool, and pushed Schiavone back behind the baseline at backhand side. Errors flooded the arena. And to no avail, Azrenka won the first set.

Set 2: 6-3
The crowd still give support to Schiavone, who really looked out of sort. Azarenka went on to do her things, making almost no mistake, stretching Schiavone side-to-side by hitting the corners out of both wings. The roar from the crowd came everytime Schiavone held serve, which was so hard-fought. Azarenka tired Schiavone out by dictating the ball side-to-side, and the errors off Schiavone's backhand side was always expected. But Schiavone's heart was too big to give up, and after the long duece, Schiavone held serve for a second time, and the roar was again given from the crowd. Azarenka serve went quickly, as usual. Schiavone held serve after many long dueces, again. You can never measure the passion in Schiavone's soul. She pushed further than her limit, but Azarenka is a fighter, too, and put Schiavone down with great shots; the running backhand lob was played, and got a standing ovation by some in the crowd.

A nice handshake at the end, both showing great respect for each other. And there was a birthday cake to Vika!

Of course, there is three threads about Ana but only one for Victoria.

Anyways.

She seemed solid. Good for a first match back, and will more likely improve match by match as this is her best surface.

Sexa

She drew the top seed for back-to-back tournaments... At least won a match in both.

Better scoreline than in Paris at least.
