Re: BOMBSHELL: Carlsbad 1R (7/VIP) Ivanovic def. Pomenika 46 63 62
My review of the match. Cibulkova vs Ivanovic
Set 1: 6-4
Ivanovic struggled to find her forehand and first serve, at first, but when she found her rythm aces and winners came pouring in. Cibulkova pressed hard, though, and was more mentally tough, and could produce many constructive winners, also. She won the set with passing-shot winner after Ivanovic had volleyed back 3 times in a row. It was a very competitive set.
Set 2: 3-6
Ivanovic becomes more proactive rigjt at the start, and begins to take balls earlier on the rise, robbing time off of Cibulkova's strokes. The crowd was behind her, obviously. And she looked motivated. You know Ivanovic is in control when she can hit a backhand down the line winner of a return, under pressure. If it had been any other opponent, Ivanovic would have cruised this set 6-1, but Cibulkova would not give in: het first serve really pops, for a player of her stature; and she fights like a bull, hitting balls early, dictating most points on Ivanovic's serve. Ivanovic won a lot of the shorter rallies on Cibulkova's serve, while Cibulkova won the longer ones. In the last game of second set, Ivanovic defends better, using a wicked backhand slice, and hits a lot harder off her forehand, and was helped with a little bit of luck; she won the set point with a net-cord winner. Ajede trumps Pome, literally; there were a lot of Ajedes (Idemo, too).
Set 3: 2-6
Cibulkova'd first serve went downhill, while Ivanovic's high-level ,play was steady. She really looked baffled by what Ivanovic was giving to her. But when serving out the match, Ivanovic's serve gone south. Fotunately, Cibulkova, too, doublefaulted, and Ivanovic is still great on return the match ends with Ivanovic's classic happy squeal. It was a very exhillriating match.
