They're being taken seriously because Serena is speaking on Hingis, a player many on this board have an interest in.

And to Serena, she wasn't speaking to the media or was even asked by a reporter. She was speaking to the owner of the team and he decided to put her words out to the public. I can't see what motivation, shade/non shade or whatever, Serena would have in a private conversation instead of an interview.

You posted before me, but agree with the logic behind the message.

It's true, but a pretty big slap to the increasing number of doubles specialists.

Re: Serena: Hingis would be Top 10 for sure

I don't think Hingis would be top 10 in single, I think a lot of girls (even the one she beat in WTT like Genie and Kleybanova (same could be said for Kleybanova btw)) would manage to find a way to beat her. Of course she'd win matches but I think it would be hard for her to beat player consistantly, she'd have bad matches during tournaments and she'd loose. That being said she could, and should be #1 in double. I think it's probably what she's aiming for now and should be too. She's old and hasn't played single in years, if she wants a real 3rd shot at the WTA she should focus on one event that will be less damaging to her body.

Re: Serena: Hingis would be Top 10 for sure

Hingis is delusional if she thinks she can compete with these 20 somethings. The power that REALLY took her out the game has gotten even more pronounced, and she is 32 and was NEVER the speediest or most athletic player. BTW her diss to the current crop of doubles team is really interesting. Lets see how the rapidly deteriorating Hantuchova and Hingis fare against the likes of Vinci and Errani.

Serena STOP making pronouncements in private. They get reported!

Re: Serena: Hingis would be Top 10 for sure

And another thing Martina... when that "other" Martina played doubles at an advanced age she partnered with a much younger and stronger player in Kuzzie. If im Hingis im sticking to coaching. Its not like she's coming back partnered with Serena or a serious servebot or returning demon!

Furthermore since when has WTT been the barometer of success on the real tour. WTT is hit and giggle tennis at best!

Can we dispense with the ferver around Hingis, I would rather talk about the possible return or Vaidisova who is still only 24!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Serena: Hingis would be Top 10 for sure

Has anyone even looked at the top 32? There's less than ten legit power players in it, idc how old Hingis is, it's the same as people last time saying she had no chance then she goes out there and proves herself. Henin, Mauresmo, Clijsters, Davenport, Dementieva all gone, the field is weaker than it was, there might be more power players but they're also beyonddddd inconsistent. If she came back she would easily be top 20, i'll say that for sure. I think she would have a chance at going very deep at a slam, i mean with what just happened at Wimbledon and such, nothing is out of the picture.

Hantuchova Dokic
Petkovic Li Clijsters Jankovic Lisicki
Kvitova Wawrinka Gasquet Nalbandian

I'm not suggesting she is pursuing some insidious agenda or anything. It was a throwaway remark, much like she sometimes claims to be the underdog in her matches. I don't take comments like this from Serena at face value. But if you want to, that's fine by me.

Well, you have Dementieva facing a young Aga Radwanska (17 or 18, can't remember) on YouTube, and Aga won. You have Mauresmo facing a 18 years old Lisicki on YouTube, and Mauresmo won by a thread.

I don't believe one second that the field is weaker today.

She had to say something nice about a coach from her boyfriend's academy.

Later on in grand slam tournaments I would rather be playing a kerber, kvitova, wozniacki instead of a davenport, cljsters, henin. You have the three I mentioned who are having terrible years to what they're accostomed to having. Li is inconsistent, never know which one is going to show up, Errani more of a clay courter. Lisicki while great on grass is average everywhere else. If Hingis comes back and gets deep into a GS and has to play one of these players her chances are far greater than when she had the possibility of facing mauresmo, clijsters, henin, and the williams sisters. This is what i'm referring to, there werefar greater athletes in 2006-2007 than there is today as well as mentally strong opponents. We'll see what happens if she comes back but I would like her chances far better today than in 2006.

Hantuchova Dokic
Petkovic Li Clijsters Jankovic Lisicki
Kvitova Wawrinka Gasquet Nalbandian
