Is Monica Doin An Arantxa?

Monica's start to the year hasn't been great, 2r loss in AO has definitely taken a toll.... Tokyo was a complete struggle and now another 2r loss? Is she on an accelerated decline like Arantxa had??? I really hope it's not true and that she'll step it up and work harder.

First of all, Seles injured her ankle at the Australian Open, and even though she was a good sport about it, something like that is going to affect how you play. Having not played much probably had something to do with her struggles in Tokyo, but keep in mind that was a high-level tournament, and reaching the finals is nothing to hang your head about.
Secondly, Lina Krasnoroutskaia is a quality opponent. I think she was in the top thirty (not 100% sure, though) when she got hurt last year, and in the past few weeks, she's started to play the kind of tennis that she was playing before she got hurt. Without that injury (I think it was an ankle injury), she could have potentially been a top twenty player or better at this point. She's still only 18 or 19 years old, so it's entirely possible that she'll get back to that level.
And it's not like that match was a blowout. The final score was 7-5, 7-5, so obviously she's not embarrassing herself out there.
Yes, Monica has had a bit of a slow start to this season, but I think that once she gets a few more matches under her belt, she'll be fine. If she's still struggling like this in a couple months, then maybe we can start to worry, but I don't think she will be.

A 3 set runner up effort @ Tokyo, a Tier I is hardly a struggle

Seles stole my line.

Monica will be fine... Lina is proving herself to be a great up-and-coming player.

What happens is Monica does not take care of herself. I wish she would just pull out next week and not play until Indian Wells. I really do love Monica but she just sets herself up for these setbacks. I had no clue that she was going to play this week and honestly I don't think this loss is too bad of a thing right now because she needs the rest.

Monica was still injured in Tokyo, so don't get your panties in a bunch over a few close scores. Basically, she lost to the player who was the world's #1 junior over 3 years ago 7-5 7-5. That is currently the entire evidence of her "accelerated decline". So get over it.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

While I think it is premature to forsee a string of poor results for Monica, I don't think this should be overlooked.

I remember after Aranxta's loss to Frazier at the 2001 French Open I foresaw her descent into oblivion and warned of it happening. I was dismissed as exaggerating at best, insulted at worst.

While Monica has recovered from poor results before, there is real urgency, and never more so than now, at 29, ranked ninth. It's getting a little late for more comebacks.
