Ai's Diary (updated)

This is from http://www.ai-sugiyama.com/diary/index.html (Ai's offical website) Here is the rough translation.

2/5/2003

Hi, everyone!!! Today I had a big win for the first time in a loooong time!!! Pleeeeeeeeeese listen!!!!
Im now in Antwarp, Belgium and despite my travelling around the world so long, this is my first time to land on the Belgian soil!!
But the crowd here is warm n nice thanks to my partnership with Kim!!
Especially because last week I was playing in the atmosphere where I had to play against two french players in front of their home crowd, I could play feeling really great today.

Today my opponent was Dokic. Despite her ranking, no.10, she was seeded no.6 and so didnt recieve a first round bye in this tournament where so many top 10 players are playing. (the top 4 seeds receive a first round bye)
As I'd carried the recent good form into this tourny, this tough draw (facing Jelena in the first round) gave me some mixed feeling. To be honest, I felt like there were many other easier sections where I could have been drawn!! that was my honest impression. But I just can't afford to keep grumping like that.
So, I took it as positive n stepped on the court talking to myself "Let's snatch the bonus points!!!" As that was my third time to take on a top 10 player in as many weeks, I had more than enough mental and lessons and preparation for this match.
During the match I managed to get thru many difficult situations thinking "Let's not make the same old mistakes!!"

In tennis, there is little difference in skills among all of us, so it's the key how tough you can play. How long you can stay focused n concentrated is pretty much all that matters.
I really feel like I'm learning great lessons through playing tennis. Tonight I will sleep having the dream of today's win and keep on trying hard from tomorrow on.

I have no match to play tomorrow, so I will just practice.
Everyone, please keep on cheering for me so I can put on my best performance again in the next match!!!

dewa matane (C ya)

With Love, Ai

She's so sweet. She's right about the difference being so mental. Hope she keeps getting good wins!

"In tennis, there is little difference in skills among all of us, so it's the key how tough you can play. "

This quote may not be true as such, but I like her positive attitude - and it's good she enters every match believing she can win. I remember her match against Venus at Wimbledon which she lost in straight sets, but I was impressed with how focused and determined she looked throughout. She gave every point 100%.

I like that attitude. Why can't it happen? Who's to
say it really won't happen despite the reputations and
historical match records?

I really detest when Tv commentators drag down matches
by saying out right before the first set is even over ...

"Henin should win this- no problems".

I feel like saying why am I sitting here watching this on
TV if it's a boring nothing match anyway?

We've been getting Euro Sport delayed coverage of events
and that British commentator Sam Smith is always giving
no player any chance against a big star or a Williams. I
couldn't believe when during the exhibition event the
Collins Cup she went on to say Daniela will never be a
Grand Slam winner???

I digress- getting back to Ai-Chan. Thank god somebody
believes in themselves. Good to see a positive attitude.
As I said before Asian tennis is getting back the sort of
respect it had during the Kimiko reign.

Congrats AI!

She has a great attitude - admitting she would rather have been in another part of the draw, but taking the positives from it, and determined not to make the same old mistakes - really honest

So let's all cheer for Ai as she requested!

Good Luck Ai!

Q&A with Ai

This is the Q&A with Ai from the official web.

Q. How did you start playing tennis?

A. I first picked up a racquet at 3 and by the time I turned 5, I was already hitting with my parent on the court for fun. I like(d?) hitting into the wall. For some reason since I was very little, there's been a picture of the Wimbledon Center Court in my house and so I'd always wanted to play tennis someday. It was when I was entering (senior) high school when I really felt like turning pro with realistic thoughts.

Q. I'm assuming your biggest weapon is your backhand, right?

A. Well, I certainly feel comfortable with my backhand, but I think in my game, the balance as a whole is the key. I think I'm the kind of player that sets up each point by hitting a variety of shots (unlike power players), so the balance as a whole is very important. I also consider my footspeed and timing to take the ball as my strengths.

Q. What do you usually do in off-days?

A. Playing golf, relaxing with aroma-massage and when I'm back in Japan I go to hot springs. Relaxing in the hot spring n eating exquisite food makes me forget about the fatigue from the tour.
