The Top 10: Putting up a fight

They say that if you're going to go down, go down fighting. Which players when they lose, make their opponents work full time for the win? Below is the ratio of 3 set losses to total losses for the top 10 (plus Bovina) since the start of the 2002 season (Fed Cup included). Retirements and walkovers count towards total losses. Stats include today's play. Player rank in parentheses. Anyone know of other players who tend to make opponents work hard for a win against them?

(8) L. Davenport: 7/11 = 63.6%
(17)E. Bovina: 16/26 = 61.5%
(1) S. Williams: 3/5 (1 loss by retirement - 1 set) = 60%
(7) J. Capriati: 11/19 (1 loss by walkover) = 57.9%
(3) K. Clijsters: 10/18 = 55.5%
(2) V. Williams: 5/10 (1 loss by retirement - 1 set) = 50%
(6) A. Mauresmo: 8/17 (1 loss by walkover) = 47%
(4) J. Henin-Hardenne: 9/23 = 39%
(9) M. Seles: 6/16 = 37.5%
(5) D. Hantuchova: 10/27 = 37%
(10) J. Dokic: 10/29 (1 loss by walkover, 2 by retirement - one 3 setter, one straight setter) = 34.5%

Interesting stats, thanks.

I just noticed that she has quite a bit of 3-set matches.

Interesting statistics but I fail to see that it necessarily indicates a player that fights to the end. Just as often, it can indicate a player that gives up. Davenport has the highest perecentage of three set losses but it is because she has been having so much trouble closing out matches. In most of her three set loses she had the match won in the second set but let her opponent back in the match.

Right Jane, and maybe it is to be put in parallel with 3 sets win/loss records.

Yeah, here are some of Lindsay's 3-set losses:

LA final vs Rubin: served for the match
Moscow final vs Maleeva: had match point I think, third set tiebreak
Zurich final vs Schnyder: had match point
WTA Champs vs Seles: had match point
AO first round vs Henin-H: up 4-1 in third set

There was one other 3-set loss to Clijsters right after she returned from injury, and I can't think of the other 3-set loss.

Make that two three-set losses to Clijsters. Lindsay's 3-set record for 2002 was 5-6!
