Putting old challenges to bed (and lining up a new one)

This is probably the last in this intermittent series

Things they said would never happen

Referring to V & S

'Neither of them will ever have as many GS titles as Martina Hingis'.

'Neither of them will ever win (insert name of GS tournament)'

Actually, Serena just did something NO other active player has ever done. This is the first time she really has an advantage over Monica in some statistical measure, or tennis accomplishment.

Time for a new challenge

TEN GS titles - She's halfway there, ambitious, and 21 years old.

I think she can do it if she stays injury free and continues playing like this. If she plays for 5 more years and retires and 26, and wins one a year she can make it. But she can win more than one a year so its definitely within reach.

Winning Wimbledon last year gave her an accomplishment and statistical advantage over Monica. So ...

Ten grand slams only is setting the bar too low for someone who's just won the last four. Serena's setting herself up for greatness - I think she should be aiming at 15 at least (injury permitting).

No WILLIAMS will ever have 10 GS titles and they certainly will not play one another again in a Grand Slam final.

That is just not possible. LOL

Well hopefully Serena will not get stabbed at her prime. Monica was stabbed at 19 when she had already 8 slams. Serena is at 21 and has only 5 slams. At 19 she had only 1

I'm sure if Monica would have been allowed to continue at her prime up until 21, she would have at least 12 slams total including Wimbledon during that period. That being said, good luck to Serena and hopefully she will be allowed to live up to her potential.

Serena hasn't had quite as good an overall career as Martina yet, but it's obvious that she will be ahead on that score before this year is out, so she might as well set a higher goal.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Actually I don't think it's obvious yet... Maybe Serena won't win a slam for the rest of the year just like Steffi in 1990 or 1994, or Monica in 1996 or Lindsay in 2000 or Martina in 1998 or 1999. All of them started those years with some amazing tennis, and we saw in the AO that Serena almost lost 3 matches, so she can be beaten.

selesrules - If I ever her Monica herself make that arguement, then I'll pay attention to it. If I ever hear Monica even once use the stabbing as an excuse for her career results, then I'll take that into account.

In the menatime, can you tell me how many GS title Mo Connolly would have had? Or how many Martina Navratilova would have had if she had't had to be in the closet half her life.

As long as we're off to fantasyland, I mean.

The difference is, it wasn't an accident, it was a crime with the goal of changing history. The goal was to hurt Monica and help Steffi. I've said it a million times before, if Monica got in a car accident or fell or whatever, it would be different. This is NOT the same because it's an evil act with a purpose. By saying comments like "oh well", you are supporting CRIMES and you are shitting on the word MORALS and wiping your ass with it and you are insulting TENNIS HISTORY by saying that a criminal can write history like he wants.

why must we bring this up AGAIN

anyway....

the past is the past

As for Serena, I'm not so sure about her French or Wimbledon titles

1) Kim Clijsters is wicked on Clay, and she lead 5-1 on rebound ace
2) Venus will have pletny of time to catch up, 6-4 in the third in January spells doom in May

If Serena beats Venus at Miami in straights, then shes ok, but untill that happens I'm skeptical

As for Advantage over Monica, well Monica won 5 slams in a row (91OZ-92French) She didnt play Wimby in 91. But granted she never won Wimbledon (damn you grunt-haters) anyways, Monica is still the most accomplished by a mile untill potentially the end of the year
