Preception Deception.

Whenever Venus and Serena play in a GS Final, and commit large numbers of errors, they are ALWAYS called to task for it.
There was a very low error count at Wimbledon, but little comment was made. To me this is STILL their BEST match even though the scoreline suggest otherwise.

However, contrast this to the superlatives we got when Kim Clisters and Jennifer Capriati had their marathon match in the French 2001. While their match qualified as a FOUR set match for comparison, they combined for almost 200 unforced errors.

Except for its length, this match was similar to this year's AO final
from a competetive standpoint, however unforced errors per set were roughly 30% more than in yesterdays contest even when dividing them by Four. (four Sets)

Please explain WHY these matches are viewed so differently???

That FO final was not such great quality until the end, dont be fooled the unforced errors were flying off kim's and jen's raquet.

most of the errors made by each sister was forced by the other IMO. the UE error count is inaccurate IMO.

as for the other stuff...well, isuspect you have an answer to your own question VSFan!

Yeah, Tennischick!

I asked a question that I already had the answer for.

I just wondered if anyone else could see the double standard applied when the sisters matches are reviewed. Their Wimbledon match had a very low error count, AND lower than average winners.

Note that few responded, I sort of expected this would be the case.

Truth is that ALL power players normally have rather high UFE counts when playing each other. V&S seem to be singled out for this criticizim. I is a way to suttely diminish their acomplishments.

Good to see you posting, I haven't been here much myself.

These kind of stats are common when you have two mobile big hitters squaring off. That tends to render the stats somewhat meaningless. When they were highlighted in last night's match, my thought was that they players are actually hitting many more winners than errors; it's just that the majority of the winners were coming back. So even though more rallies ended with UE's than winners, that doesn't fully capture the number of spectacular shots hit. Notice how the media reports on "error filled" matches, and not matches "full of breathtaking shots".

Brian you too saw that "error filled" match, the media is alway tryng to find something,
i think that serena had more errors in her match against kim but nobody said anything.
The matches with Serena and Jenn are fills with errors too but nobody is saying anything. Those who didn't like the match will tell you that the quality of the match was low, but if you compare it to some of the match between other top player, it is not that different when serena is playing in them. She plays a high risk game, that's why she has so many errors.

The media is always trying to find something negative to say. The have to put something, it's like it's part of their jobs.

To me Pam is a frustraded person who needs to live with the fact that she never won a Slam during her pathetic career, and she was never a threat to anybody. She resents the fact that players can get to places she always dreamed about. Unfortunatelly she has a microphone in her mouth and that allows her to spread a whole bunch of BS. That gives her joy. Someone should tell her to stick that micro somewhere else, she would get even more joy that way.

I no longer feel any need to be defensive about it. It was compelling entertainment. I'll give you a tip though. Any time someone's talking about the number of errors, make sure to ask if they actually saw the match, or if they just checked the stat line.

An unforced error at the end of a 12 shot rally featuring levels of speed power shot-making and sheer spectacle..... is an unforced error. This match had a lot of those. Long, wild rallies that ended with an error. But those rallies would have ended far sooner if a non-Williams were the opponent. And usually with a Williams winner.

Clijsters can go defense with them, but she hasn't got the offense. The rest of the top ten has provided scant opposition this past twelvemonth.
