Will Serena get the $1 million bonus from the ITF?

When this happened with Navratilova in '84, they gave her the $1 million. Willl they do the same for Serena?

I am not sure if this has been talked about for years...or even decades! I hope she gets it.

The $1 million bonus was an incentive by the ITF to encourage players to play all 4 Grand Slam events. At the time, many top players skipped Roland Garros & the Australian Open and the ITF thought that the bonus would be a positive sign for better participation at those two events.

Obviously, they were right. Since Martina's Slam, support for Roland Garros & the Australian Open has gone back up to Grand Slam levels and the issue of the bonus has never come up again. Martina's was a one-time thing.

In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of the truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night

I think after the gave Martina the million the changed the rule to state 'calendar year' explicitly.

doesn't matter if she gets the mil but the accomplishment should be formally and prestigeously acknowledged. she deserves nothing less. now that she is living in LA again, maybe they'll rename a street after her. Serena Boulevard? i can see it already...

TC, isn't calling it the "Serena Slam" enough recognition?

I'm glad Serena knows she didn't win the grand slam. But it's still a great accomplishment! I just don't want Serena saying she won the grand slam the way Martina Navratilova said she did in 1984. It bothered me that Martina thought she had won the grand slam in 1984 when everyone knew she didn't.

Happiness is like a cat. If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you. It will never come. But if you pay no attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing up against your legs and jumping into your lap. - William Bennett

In 1981, Philippe Chatrier, the President of the International Tennis Federation (ITF), issued a decree stating that winning four Grand Slams in a row was the requirement to winning a Grand Slam and it did not have be done in a calendar year. That was the rule established. It was done by the ITF, the governing body in charge of all 4 Grand Slam events.

Martina received her $1 million bonus after winning Roland Garros in 1984, her fourth Slam in a row. At the time she was given the recognition of a Grand Slammer by the ITF.

Since then they have changed the rules and reinstated the calendar year requirement. But when Martina won it, the rules were different. That is why the Guiness Book of World Records still recognizes her as the fourth person in history to have won the Grand Slam.
