The Tennis press, the Williams sisters and the tour

All of us who love tennis should cry out to the press to stop their biased coverage of the William sisters.

The William sisters are here to stay. They were criticised for not playing enough. They are now playing a lot more and thereby achieving their full potential. In the process the networks especially and the tennis world as a whole are benefitting.

The fact is that if Venus and Serena continue to play more, they will maintain their number 1 and 2 ranking for a while yet! There is therefore a very high chance that they meet in the finals.

The press must now realise that they have a choice.

To sell Venus and Serena to the public OR to continue to put them down and thereby have nothing to sell!! Most people do not know Venus and Serena they only know what the press has written about them.
If all the press writes are negative insinuations about their matches then WTA should not be suprised when they find themselves with precious few who want to watch them.
Venus and Serena have earned their positions and have every right to be in the final. They are not going to be intimidated by negative press. Only the tour stands to suffer!!

I was going to post yesterday that the reason the Sisters' "doubles specialist" opponents were smiling so damn much was because they knew for a change "the world would be watching" them play tennis.

Only 3 women get "the world will be watching" attention. Two are playing tonight and the other one is probably checking out her next NHL millionaire.

The WTA and the media would do better to scrutinize the rest of the women. Then perhaps the man on the street might know who some of them are, when they aren't being built up (and then knocked back down) to "dethrone" the Sisters.

I'm sure some of them have interesting stories (I know Schnyder, Pierce and a couple of others have great/sordid stories that should be household knowledge.

If your fave's coach isn't Richard Williams, that's just her first problem...

I was there when the ALL BLACKS won the World Cup in 2011!!!

"I don't know that I changed all that much. They just found somebody worse." - Aging tennis bad boy Jimmy Connors, referring to John McEnroe, in 1984.

There can never be too many "Sister Slams!"

It's good you didn't then. You would have been wrong.

ROTFL!! Do you know, I've *never* seen Vivi without a smile on her face; winning or losing; world watching or not!

Can't you just be happy the Williams sisters were the better team on the night won? Why must you criticise their opponents to be happy? If what you hate is the media showing disrespect to the Williams sisters, why must you resort to doing the same to other players to get your point across?

Vivi & Conchita & Patricia & Paola 2004 Olympic Silver & Bronze medalists, Vivi & Anabel 2008 Olympic Silver medalists - congratulations!

1) It is easy to dislike the Williams sisters.

2) The press is made up of ordinary people with their own opinions.

3) Combine one and two.

"Gee you guys, why oh why are there negative articles about the sisters? And why am I such a naive bumpkin?"

If youre a hater of course its easy to dislike them. People disliked martina Nav. People disliked Martina Hingis. People disliked Chris Everett( I know I did). People disliked steffi.(she was never my favorite).

So who really cares. I don't. I know more people like the sisters than the haters hate. Its the same for all dominant players.

Trust me if something horrible happened to serena like it did monica and it crippled her chances of being a dominant player and true challenger to a grandslam then guess what? She would become a sentimental favorite and cheered by all. Its really sad.

On the same level thats what happened to pete. Dominant, no love or respect, loses like fool and all of a sudden sentimental favorite. Poor pete hes such a loser lets root for him.

the climate changes as the player matures. Look at agassis career. He wasn't always loved.

The bottom line is if youre a fan great. Thats all that matters. The haters are really irrelevant and bitter people who should be ignored. That goes for haters of all players.
