Question to Williams fans RE Richard

This has probably been asked before, but I personally have never seen a thread about it.

What happened to Richard Williams? I know he still coaches Venus and Serena, but he is a lot less visible than he used to be. Personally, he drove me nuts with his cooky statements you never knew you could believe. Not to mention the Wimbledon signs. But he's arguably the best tennis coach I've ever heard of, especially because it's all self-taught. So why does he seem to step back a little? Because he thinks the sisters don't need that much guidance anymore? Backlash against him? The divorce?

Just wondering.

I'm pretty sure it's the divorce. The parents are pretty much never at the same tournaments now. But he was with Venus at a number of tournaments last year.

Well, you aren't hearing from him lately because he doesn't go to Australia and he probably never will. He is afraid of flying, so he really can't fly to Australia.

As for him keeping low, I believe he made all those statements way back to get Venus and Serena on the board and maybe put doubts in other people's mind as to their ability.

Now, they are on top, he doesn't have to say anything. He's letting them do all the talking with their rackets.

I definitely don't think the divorce had that much affect with their relationship because Richard and Oracene have been separated for a long time now. They still love him, and you would know this if you saw the interview with Venus on ESPN after her Semi match, Venus gave a BIG smile, and said "Hi Daddy" in a little childs voice. It was sooo cute.

VF - Not for nothin' but I don't think the divorce affected his relationship with his daughters. However, it may be quite uncomfortable for the parents to be at the same tournament.

Here's another question for you guys. I heard somewhere that Oracene also coaches the girls. Is that true? Has she always done that and just not been recognized for it? Or is it more of a recent thing?

The girls have always maintained that Ocacene is their coach also. Remember the 2000 Australian Open, there was this "frenzy" that Serena had to go there without her coach and wasn't Richard horrible not to go with her. It was piled on more when she looked rusty in the early matches and was beaten easily by Litskoseva in the 4th round. Serena simply said that Ocacene was her coach also and she was there with her. How much of a coach she really is, who knows, but they have maintained that she is their coach.

That's what I said, but he doesn't go to Austalia because of his fear of flying and the tremendously long flight. The only reason he didn't go to Wimbledon last year was due to illness, otherwise I think he would have been there.

Oracene and Richard kinda take turns in coaching. She does the over seas (flying) and he does more coaching in the states.
