Roland Garros. It's the hardest slam to defend. But still, don't bet against them

So soon, tennisIlove? But who will the non-Williams finalist (one player) be? (just give the name of one player. Note: I didn't say winner)

I think that soon. Like I said, Roland Garros is the hardest Slam to defend. I think it will be tough.

Capriati, Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters, Seles are the top runners. But the thing that makes Roland Garros tough to defend, is that there are so many clay court specialists. You'll have tough rounds through out.

Mauresmo, Suarez, Fernandez among others

I see. The red clay is a very tricky surface.

I really think Justine or Kim can beat Venus at Roland Garros. Venus doesn't have the best movement on clay, and the Belgians have shown they can compete with Venus even when she's not playing awful. Serena's a different story.

I don't care who, when or where as long as it's soon. 4 tragically bad GS finals is enough of a record as Serena's dominance.

Henin beat Serena when Serena was playing well. The German Open was an epic match.

Clijsters only beat Venus once. The LA Champs, Venus was injured. I never saw the Hamburg final.

So I'm not sure you can say "the Belgians have shown they compete with Venus even when she's not playing awful". It doesn't add up.

Ryan: Hopefully this final will be better

Two picks for RG already, and one of the Belgians. Hmmm?

I think that Wimbledon and US Open are Williams territory. I agree that RG is probably the toughest, but I think that Venus is very motivated to win it. I believe she will make it to the finals this year. If there is someone else besides a Williams in the finals there...I don't know who it'll be. Probably Kim. She plays well on clay and has done it before (finalist). Justine is also very strong there, even though she lost to Kapros last year. Maybe Dinara!!!! (I know, I'm dreaming...but can't I dream a bit?!)

i don't think davenport or mauresmo can beat them at least not they way they have been playing the last 6 months.

jen can beat them but she has to be really on and have some luck because she played well against serena at the championships but still didn't beat her. i also think in a grand slam jen needs an easy first couple of rounds so she get get her game on track.

kim surprised me agaiinst serena at the AO this year. kim was very consistent with her groundies and could handle the pace of serena. serena had trouble because i don't think she has played someone who is that consistent against with their groundies. serena wasn't use to having so many long rallies but i expect both sisters to overcome this problem as the depth increases.

i can see the potential in hantuchova but you can never tell with her.

i don't think justine has it against the sisters.

dokic needs to get quicker and add another dimension to her game.

bovina has shown talent and i think she now just needs to get over the mental barrier.

daniilidou to me looks like the best prospect. she just needs to really work that serve out.

i think this year these are the women who have the most chance against the sisters and i would have to say the best time to make a charge would be at roland garros. kim and justine are great clay court players and i don't think they have ever been in such good form going into the open. if they can keep up their current form i would think at least one of them would get through. but the sisters already have the momentum and that is hard to stop.

Go the aussies! stosur!!!
and good luck russians: dementieva, safina, kirilenko, sharapova, kuznetsova, bovina, zvonareva, dushevina.

also good luck to: azarenka, lucic, sprem, vakulenko, vaidisova, safarova, ivanovic, groenefeld, mirza, krajicek, kvitkova, larcher de brito, lisicki.

Yet another RG, but also the first mention of Jennifer. The plot thickens.

vs1, I'm going to borrow your wording to re-title this thread. It's clearer.

Clijsters, RG!

Actually, I don't know. I think they're not invincible, just very very good, and I do think Kim has a good chance some time in the next 18 months or so. I would say on the past year's results Wimbledon and US this year will be all-Williams, but if Kim or someone else improves, who knows?

When: Probably not 2003. If the other girls can't do it at RG then it won't happen. No-one has the game to beat them on grass, and by the time the US Open comes around the girls will be too demoralised to have any chance at all.

Who: Of the top tenners in their current form I'm gonna go out on a limb and say either Justine or Amelie on Clay. Justine demonstrated last clay season that she is more than good enough to challenge the sisters on clay courts. And if Amelie can push Venus on hardcourt I think Clay would suit her even better.

For Kim or Jenn to pose a threat some things have to happen. 1) Jenn needs to get to the final rounds where she can meet the sisters 2) Kim needs to grow some balls

None of the other top tenners have the game to disrupt the dominance at this stage.
