This mental thing is overrated and you can work on your athleticism but you can't buy yourself talent, so supreme shotmaking it is

I don't think anyone in their right mind would classify Radwanska as the better shotmaker

A good tennis brain (which I'm guessing is not what the OP means by mentality) is at least as important as any of these things IMO.

Mentality is a little overrated these days IMO. Of course it's important for winning matches, but it doesn't always equate to great tennis. Similar story for athleticism. My ordering would be:

Shotmaking = tennis brain > athleticism > mentality

Re: Would you rather have - Supreme Athleticism, Supreme Mentality, or Supreme Shotma

Supreme mentality can bring average players to work on their athleticism or shotmaking to make it better, and most of all to cling on matches and turn them in their favor.
Look how many talentless players have been near the top, but how many talented players were just good for few matches but not winning tournaments.

As for the Venus comment....she has never been a mentally clutch player! Her brief domination in the early 00s was more due to her supreme game and athletism coupled with total confidence( back then). If you really look back, how many tight big matches did she really win? Yet how many times at the latter stages of slams have we seen her falter and her game crumbles , being a mentally weaker player she has nothing to fall back on? A mentally strong player( ie Serena or Maria) would have more many if those matches. IMO that's a large reason why, especially off grass where the huge "automatic" weapons get neutralized a bit, she hasn't won more majors and just 2 outside of Wimbledon.

But then if that's the case then pretty much 90% of the players listed should be in SS....besides. IMO, the two do not go hand in hand as a regular: there have been so many big shotmakers through the history of tennis but have been unable to win a slam/multiple(Kafelnikov, Rios, Enqvist, Safin, Philliposis, Berdych, Kuznetsova, Sabatini, Spirlea, Pierce, Safina, Dementieva, Petrova, Zvereva ) because they lacked that mental edge or fortitude, heck even big shots makers like Kvitova or Kuznestova struggle with their mental fortitude.
Nailed it.

Those are just two players that basically defined your description of supreme shotmakers in the OP. Davenport for example was a supreme shotmaker but she's not outrageously inconsistent like Pierce and Kvitova. Also when you're labelled a supreme shotmaker I feel like you should posess an awareness about shot selection, which would lead to not making outrageous errors by going for impossible shots like Pierce and Kvitova so oftenly did/do.

2007 USO.

And I disagree about shotmakers always being inconsistent; Hingis was incredibly consistent at the top of the game.

Majority of those on list are inconsistent, not a universal connotation.

Yeah, that's right, making 50.000 UES per match is considered as Supreme Shotmaking
A Supreme Shotmaker is a player who is consistently capable of executing all tennis shots (FH,BH,Volley,Smash,Slice etc...) well and has the ability to hit winners consistently, Kvitova is definitely incapable of playing consistent shotmaking, she's terminally hit and miss, just like her fellow countrywomen, Lisucki and Hypeges.

Mentality. Champions who aren't playing well have won win matches because of their supreme mentality. For example: Serena, Maria & Vika

Victoria Azarenka.
Serena Williams. Maria Sharapova.

Wozniacki. Stosur. Jankovic. Bouchard. Halep. Muguruza.
Venus. Stephens. Cornet. Hampton. Bencic.
Seles. Henin. Davenport. Hingis. Clijsters.

Re: Would you rather have - Supreme Athleticism, Supreme Mentality, or Supreme Shotma

Lindsay Davenport, who really lacks in athleticism and mental strength, shows us that being a supreme shotmaker is the most important. She shows us that having a solid technical foundation in your game can make you successful.
Look at Wozniacki - a great fighter and a terrific athlete, terrible shotmaker and looks like will be going nowhere. Her career tells us exactly the opposite of Davenport's.

Like Petra during Wimbledon 2011, so many people commented on her ability to hit the ball amazingly well. Saying like it sounds like a gun shot when the ball hits her racket on the grass. Amazing stuff.
Many people were also saying that her mentality is her great strength.

Petra Kvitová * Tomáš Berdych * Lucie Šafářová * BZS * Angie Kerber
Karolína Plíšková * Andy Murray * Roger Federer * Tommy Haas
Radek Štěpánek * Leander Paes ** Andrea Hlaváčková & Lucie Hradecká
And other Czech Davis Cup and Fed Cup team members

Re: Would you rather have - Supreme Athleticism, Supreme Mentality, or Supreme Shotma

In their prime, the following players had it all.

- Nadal pretty much his whole career
- Djokovic 2011
- Serena 2002
- Murray 2012-2013

Djokovic and Serena had periods of mental instability. Murray finally fixed his
Mentality.

Notice Federer is not on the list eventhough he would rank highest on the "talented" list and possessed supreme athleticism in his prime, he lacks supreme mentality. At his best he was so much more talented than the rest, which made him GOAT, but he never came back from a lost match against the top.
