Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova both prefer fast surfaces but they have been the best on clay for the last two years by far!

Serena is 12-0 on clay this year and was 17-1 last year.

Maria is 10-1 this year and 19-1 last year (incl French Open).

Why? Is there no competition on clay?

Re: Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

I still would consider clay the worst surface for both. Sharapova doesn't move like a cow on ice anymore (like she once said) but she still doesn't slide and looks a bit awkward on occasions. Serena is unstoppable on grass which is by miles her best surface. But no other top player likes to play on clay - appart from Errani. But Errani shouldn't be a threat to the top players. And Stosur doesn't find her form this year on any surface...

Same with Li (French Open champion 2011) - actually no clay-courter

And to be honest I never thought Sam Stosur would be that successful on clay till 2009

So WHO is supposed to dominate ?
Competition is garbage, so best active all-around players dominate on every surface...Not a rocket science...

I'm alaways right, even when Im wrong...

No player knows how to play clay court tennis anymore.

They are the two best players at the moment, so why the surprise if they dominate?

Re: Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

Cause the ones who are better clay players are mental mugs, simple

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

It's not like there's ten serious contenders either.
Schiavone is burn out and the rest of the clay specialists are good enough for MM titles but can't quite cut it against world class opposition.

It's better to have Serena and Maria than Errani and Kerber.
Still, the Tour really needs a new face.

Justine should comeback every year to play the claycourt season

Re: Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

There's still no top player who's predominant surface is clay, simple as that. If we had a GS contender who grew up playing on the red stuff she might be able to dominate the clay court season like Justine did. But in the meantime the best all-around players are the ones bound to win the big tournaments.

Re: Isn't it weird that Williams & Sharapova dominate on clay?

They know how to move well on clay, well enough. And they can make the difference easier/faster than other players so it's not weird....

Jankovic | Goerges | Petkovic | Safarova | Hsieh | Tsurenko
Azarenka | Mitu | Voegele | Beck | Muguruza | Cibulkova
Koehler | Mladenovic | Garcia | Robson | Cepelova | Duval
Babos | Ormaechea | Jaksic | Gasparyan | Soylu
Allgurin | Kontaveit | Zacarias | Pigossi | Haddad Maia | Abduraimova
Konjuh | Bencic | Komardina | Haas | Jorovic | Galfi | Stollar

They're just good. In case you haven't noticed, they dominate nearly everyone else off clay too...

Serena Williams: I'm going for team Sharapova 'coz she's hot
