I wanted to put Sam's inside-out forehand into this episode but the story required Vika to miss an easy shot and getting one of those things back is anything but an easy shot. Anyway, here's a sketch I did for the panel that never was.

Pure brilliance, ESPECIALLY for the Evert + J Mac combo. Bra-freakin-vo once again

Make a comic book, sell it, and I will buy it.
Johnny Mac was essential to this one. I was struggling with the story and to think of a punch line until I decided to put him in. Then everything slotted into place.

I also love how you draw the players' particular service, forehand, backhand etc. motions so well.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

The conversation between McEnroe and Evert is amazing too Also Sam's face reaction "I mean, why..". Brilliant.

I picked up from a few comments people made about the early episodes that these details really matter. Tennis is a game where players express their individuality through their style of play. For that reason it's as important to get their technique right as it is to capture a good facial likeness, particularly when drawing signature shots. If I were to draw Ivanovic hitting a forehand like Wozniacki, it wouldn't be Ivanovic.

It's also a really enjoyable challenge to try and get the players' style of play right.

Having said all of that, there was one episode where all of the action panels were taken from photographs of a player who didn't appear in the episode at all. I wanted great pictures of them sliding on clay and, good though Robby and Carla are, their slides just weren't spectacular enough for what the cartoon required. I needed another player to model these shots on.

There was only one option really

I must say I enjoyed doing the tantrum. I thought it would be straight forward, having done the "Smash Your Racquet Like A Pro" guide last year but it turns out that Vika's racquet smashing technique is very unconventional and really rather poor. Feet together, no forward weight transfer, bending at the back and bashing away at the ground with a semi-western forehand grip. It's no wonder she gets so many injuries.
