Re: The Losing Look/Stare

The worst for me was my beloved Lena when she would go into her "little girl lost" mode and just wander around the court, alternating between looking like she was going to burst into tears and glowering at Mommy Vera like a spoiled 11-year-old who was blaming all her problems on her mother. Honestly, I just wanted to reach through the TV and slap her.

Having said that, part of the fun of being an Elena fan was her many expressions (to stay on topic, we'll stick with "Elena's bad day

Lena wasn't one to yell or throw rackets, but her face always spoke volumes.

That seventh pic should be in the dictionary under 'dejection'.

Please! She was like that from the beginning of the match. Serena brings personal turmoils onto the court (like this and USO '09) but she doesn't start getting this look when she's down a set and a break. When she's distracted, she's distracted from the beginning of the match. Big difference.

A better example would be how your girl Kvitova folded like a pack of cards at 4-4 in AO '11 semi against Sharapova and got that look even though she wasn't even losing.

Re: The Losing Look/Stare

Kuznetsova came to mind first for me. She even has special grunts for when she folds mentally.

Serena has a crybaby face when she is losing or doesn't play perfectly. I dunno what you are talking about. lol

In looking at the Woz R1 match at Stuggart, Woz had the losing look almost right after losing the first set. When a player gets the losing look/stare, it is sign that they have lost all the fight within. Maria has it too, I have seen it many times with in her matches. The "losing look/stare" is what most commentators call "body language".. It weakens the one who has it, and it strengthens their opponent.

It gives the opponents more confidence, and that is why most of the time, players that show the losing look/stare at that time, lose the match..

Serena almost never shows the "losing look/stare" even is she is down a set and 5 to 1 second set, 40 love with the opponent serving, Serena is all fight.

Although I am a Serena fan, this is not a thread to put up Serena and put down Masha and Woz. It was just so obvious in Woz's R1 match that I had to speak on it. One could come in on the match without looking at the score, just looking at Woz's face, and could tell who was losing or winning. That is telltale all that way. Maybe that is one of the secrets Serena uses to beat opponents. She never shows an expression of weakness, and never gives up.

Just sayin..
Serena is the best fighter on tour but let's get real, she showed the "desperate face" when things don't go her way, in tons of matches. The difference with most of other players is that, even when she is struggling a lot, she still tries to put pressure on her opponent when she has to close a set or a match out and generally it's enough to turn things around cause once the other chokes, Serena smells blood; calms down and become an other player. That being said I think she has been better at getting her emotions under control the past year. She is more composed during matches imo.

On topic, I agree on Woz, she does it quite often now.She was not like that 2 years ago.Kvitova and Stosur have it too at times.

This is the one I remember the most, "the neck adjustment." routine.

To be fair, I think the neck was bothering her

Re: The Losing Look/Stare

I wouldn't call it a losing look/stare, more of 'frustration' The top players would opt to racket smash or talk some BS unto themselves; Roger, Djokovic, Serena, Zvonoreva, Vika, etc

I saw Rafa so frustrated with a sour pussy face when Rossol was beating him at Wimby, I also saw Roger shed tears of frustration when Rafa beat him at 2009AO
