Hot mess: New Haven wants to become now an International tournament for 2013 already

Dallas event folds; New Haven seeks prize-money reduction

The Texas Tennis Open, a WTA tournament in Dallas, has folded. The tournament, which was played the week before the U.S. Open, was won by Italy’s Roberta Vinci in 2012. The WTA says it is looking for other playing options during that week.

In related news, the New Haven Open at Yale, which is also played the week before the U.S. Open, has asked the WTA to allow it to become an International Series (lower tier) tournament in 2013. The USTA, which owns the event, confirmed to TENNIS.com that it would like to see a major decrease in prize money. The tournament is scheduled to pay out $690,000 this year and would like to reduce that to around $235,000.

New Haven officials do not believe that a prize-money reduction will diminish its player field because players are not restricted by normal entry rules in tournaments that are played a week before a Grand Slam event. Therefore, New Haven can pay appearance fees to any players it can recruit—regardless of their ranking—without having to increase its prize money.

But I, being poor, have only my dreams
I have spread my dreams under your feet
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams

Stacey has a hot, hot mess on her hands.

New Haven will have no competition if the WTA doesn't find a replacement for Dallas, which is most likely to happen.
Players will have no other option.

A genius business move by the tournament but it sucks for all the journey women.

When you think a great historic event with so many accomplished champions, Venus, Davenport, Henin and others, and players like Seles, Hingis and other legend used to play... being reduced to a MM is painful.

TT: Singles (#85 CHR #85) F: MM Tokyo, ITF Maui
Doubles (#82 CHR#80) Titles:2016 ITF Maui (w/Davidspell), Kofu (w/Javi) 2015 ITF Maui, Lagos Slam, Bangkok, Gifu F: MM Istanbul, Tokyo; (w/Davidspell)

to think back in the day when this event was a Tier II event it used to have Tier I type draws.

This event and San Diego used to have the best draws over the US Summer.

Queen Vee, Super Rena, Krazy Kuzzie

So is there a premier tournament licence up for grabs?

I can totally understand where New Haven are coming from when you compare their field from previous years, why waste all that money?

Surely though, the top 10 rule is in effect? No player can play two in the second half of the year so that would rule out any players playing any other MM.

They already have 2 top 10 players on the list: Errani and Kerber. Can't see Errani playing it as she most likely will defend Palermo.

Great observation.
Kerber doesn't sell any tickets anywhere in the world.

They'll probably sell that Premier licence to Taipei for an indoors grass tournament in May. Just watch.

LOl i guess USTA doesn't know the rules that the exemption only applies to Premier, and the rules that 2 player can only play 1 international in the first half and 1 in the second half.

Could be a vague rule. We think that's the case because the other 3 slams have a Premier the week before. But what happens when it is only an international? Seems unfair to the top players. The rule likely still applies. Rule was probably written with the assumption Sydney, Eastbourne, and New Haven would never move. (Warsaw/Brussels - always something before RG, too.)

The WTA should make Winston-Salem a joint and bring the Tier II there.
