Re: Why are players playing so many tournaments?

It has everything to do with the tournaments, there are more ITF Tournaments than there was in 1992. It is a simple case of players not being able to get in the draws.

Re: Why are players playing so many tournaments?

Current top 100 is more competitive than say 15-20 yrs ago. Players are also fitter & can play every other week, especially if/when they lose in early rounds of an event. Some players are almost certain they wouldn't make past a certain round of an event, so enter the max no. of tourneys in a season.

Exactly. They are doing what they want. It's their job. In other cases they would be for working that much.

Re: Why are players playing so many tournaments?

Back in 1992 it used to be average ranks- so lots of early losses really took you way down-

Now you can hide those early losses

Good luck to my favs

exactly. if you look at number of matches played, a far more useful stat, the players were playing just as many years ago.

So I'm not shedding any tears for any of them
Of course there is training between tournaments. But still, playing tennis and getting payed for doing so, travelling around the world, going to parties where everything is for free....what's not to like

Re: Why are players playing so many tournaments?

Players (top 30) who play the most tournaments:

Carla Suarez Navarro 29
Roberta Vinci 29
Su Wei Hsieh 28
Sorana Cirtsea 28
Jelena Jankovic 27
Dominika Cibulkova 26

Players (top 30) who play the least tournaments:

Venus Williams 13
Maria Sharapova 17
Serena Williams 17
Victoria Azarenka 18
Ana Ivanovic 18
Na Li 19

The difference is really notable.

Ana Ivanović Schweinsteiger

Azarenka 17 tournaments (not counting Dubai zero), but 76 matches.

Suarez Navarro 29 tournaments, but 61 matches.

It's a job only in a sense of being one's career choice (at least for one period of time until they retire). Otherwise, it should be a pleasure that you 're getting payed for

Re: Why are players playing so many tournaments?

According to the WTA stats, Steffi turned pro in October 82, retired in August 99, with a win-loss ratio of 900-115. That's 1015 matches in 17 years, or about 60 matches a year. Plus 173-72 in doubles.

How many of today's players will play over a thousand matches in their career?

I think that Petrova, Pennetta and Hantuchova have played over 800 matches. I can't think of anyone approaching the 1000 mark.
