The first important WTA match of 2002

The first important WTA match of 2002

Venus Williams vs Justine Henin

World #3 vs. World #7.
Wimbledon Finals Re-match

This is the first WTA matchup in 2002, with ranking points and quality points on the line. A re-match of the 2001 Wimbledon final. The biggest star on the tour vs one of last year's breakout players. The first chance to play mindgames with your competitors. You know this one will be on the telly in Sydney girls locker. If one or both of them stink up the joint, this match is an early season footnote. If they both play well, however, this match will offer some important info about the year both players could have.

Venus won the last two GS titles.

If they both play well, and Venus wins, she sends a message to all the players at Sydney.
  • "The Goddess is in the house."
Justine is on record as saying she's going to end this year in the top three.

If they both play well, and Justine wins, she sends a message too.
  • "I'm one of the top three players RIGHT NOW."

My prediction?

"You don't tug on Superman's cape. You don't spit into the wind. You don't pull the mask off the Lone Ranger..."

The Goddess is in the House.

ITA (I totally agree) Volcana BTW, I read Justine's post match comments... Why does she think the pressure to win the title is on Venus?? Afterall, she is the defending champ, and VW has already proven that she can defend her titles :P

I'd have to say Justine's right, the pressure, such as it is, is totally on Venus.

Venus is the better player.
Venus is won the last time they played.
Venus is ranked higher.
Venus is a top five player for the past three years.
Venus is the defending US Open and Wimbledon champ.

What we know is, Venus handles this sort of pressure well.

Justine may be defending her title, but it's against a player 1000 points ahead of her in the rankings. This isn't a match Justine is supposed to win. So no pressure.
