Tamarine sets sights on top 15

Tamarine sets sights on top 15
By Wanchai Rujawongsanti
Bangkok Time

Thai tennis star Tamarine Tanasugarn aims to reach the world's top 15 and earn a place in the lucrative season-ending tournament next year.

Tamarine, ranked No 28 in the world, plans to play 27-29 of 59 WTA events starting in Australia next month.

She will skip tournaments in Asia late in the year for indoor tournaments in Europe because she feels more comfortable with the fast hardcourt surface.

``I feel more confident playing in indoor tournaments in Europe. The ball travels fast like on a grass court. I don't have to worry about rain or wind. I like it,'' she said.

Tamarine, who has been looking for her first Tour title, said she had been working hard on her serve and power with the aim to reach the world's top 15 which would earn her a place in the lucrative WTA Championships in Los Angeles.

Tamarine had a less-than-impressive year this year. She reached the women's singles final at the Busan Asian Games only to become the second best like four years ago.

The rise of compatriot Paradorn Srichaphan did not help her cause as she was totally overshadowed by Paradorn, whose world ranking moved from outside 100 to 16 in less than one year.

All the best to Tammy!

Paradorn's rise in a way will do her some good, as there would no longer be much pressure on her from the Thai public.

I'm glad to hear she is working on her game, but 27-29 tournaments

I always felt that her serve and fitness level was what kept her from improving.

there is a similarity among TOP 15 this yr,

i'll be looking forward to Tammy winning one....

Go Tammy! I'm a little disappointed that shes skipping the Asian tournaments, but i guess its for the best because the European tournies would suit her more. I was hoping she would finally win Tokyo. She definitely has the potential for top 15 if she can get a few decent results.

i'm glad she's finally giving up the asian circuit. There are more poin ts up for grabs in Europe anyway. I don't know if she can ake the top 15, but if she can, it would be so great! Still., I'd settle for another fourth round at Wimbledon and another top 30 year.

It's great that Tammy has a goal for 2003. Let's hope she's worked on her fitness and her serve, otherwise it could be a very tough slog for her.
