Next 'Great' Player

going back to just before the Open Era ....

Margaret Court Smith, and her Challenger, BJK.

Smooth transition to Evert-Navratilova.

Smooth transition to Graf-should-have-been-Seles-but....

Smooth transition to ... Serena? Well, Venus-Hingis-Henin all had their day, but, in the end ....

Have we already seen the next 'great'?

Sharapova would have to have a 25-30 (years old) like Serena, but we'reseeing it, so it's possible.

Azarenka? Resume to dte doesn't scream double-digit slams. Maybe five of six.

Stosur? Li? found slam winning form too late.

Kvitova? IMHO, best case is a Davenport-type career. Which ain't chopped liver.

thoughts?

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

People are desperately hyping up every emerging young player as the "next best thing", which means nobody has any clue yet. It seems we can only count on teenagers now, Sloene if she improves a lot, maybe Vekic, Konjuh or Barty...

I think its Madison Keys. At least as the one who has IMO the best chance to be a great player.

100%. If she can step up her fitness a little and improve (which she has ample time to do) I believe she can do big things.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

Will we know it when we see it?

I think the next great player will have great speed or mobility or at least I hope so.

I'm just too lazy to go to the US Open.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

I see a lot of players with the potential to have an Azarenka type rise to the top. Azarenka herself seems likely to do anything between a Davenport and Hingis type career.

Beyond that I feel there won't be direct handover between greats, just as there wasn't a direct handover between Graf and Serena. If Serena wins her last last slam 4 months before the next great wins her first slam (as was the case with Steffi and Serena) we may have to wait a while to see "the next BIG thing" in action at the top of her game.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

Is gonna be somebody new. I can't see any of the current established stars ever being as great as Serena. In fact it remains to be seen if any of them will even catch up with Vee/Henin.

THIS!!!! I've been watching tennis long enough to know ...everybody else is likely to turn out to be an over-hyped journey woman with a few titles & big wins here & there ala Rezai, Dokic, Paszek, etc (name all the junior grand slam winners). Tennis is a brutal sport, the 'GREAT' ones are born not manufactured

Re: Next 'Great' Player

Was also going to say Madison Keys, but someone has already thought ahead.

Needs to keep her fitness in check, and cut out so many unforced errors. She has all the qualities, especially the power, probably the closest I've seen to Serena Williams in terms of power in her shots.

Looking forward to seeing Keys progress.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

Keys isn't athletic and variegated enough to be a player like Serena or Graf, at best she can hope for a Davenport/Sharapova type career.
