Re: Next 'Great' Player

Great ala Court, Evert, Graf, Navratilova, Seles, S.William, etc??? I don't see anyone who I think is a lock for that. The greats are all dominant in a way that other players often question their ability to beat them.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

It could have been Ludmilla but her career is completely off the rails right now
Robson is making some progress but she hasn't made a big breakthrough yet and while she could be good greatness seems a far stretch

So that leaves Slpwn ?

It is definitely not Robson, Sloane or any other player from their generation.

Keys

Stephens and, to a lesser extent, Robson both have the potential to be great players as well. It's really up to them at this point.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

Unless, they relax the AER, I'm not sure we will have a new double digit champion anytime soon. Steffi was able to play adult players at 13 years of age. I'm not saying they should make young players work overtime, but some of them, judging by those transworld sports videos, are already training for hours a day... the earlier you let them dip their feet in the pond, the easier it is for them to swim in it.

It takes an enigmatic player like Serena who didn't play juniors and focused on school to surpass that.

We also have to factor in, the advent of how ubiquitous the internet is now, the pressure for a mentally fragile player could be stifling.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

I hoping Ashley Barty is a contender. She showed great form over the summer particularly in the aus open doubles. now we just need to see how she matures and learns the game on the european surfaces.

Re: Next 'Great' Player

How do we know there will be another great player in the foreseeable future? For all we know there is going to be a bunch of average to good players.

I am not conceited, I am just convinced

Because that's how tennis works. Someone's gotta rise to the occasion

Maybe there will be a group of players who will win between 3 - 6 grandslams which like the op said isn't exactly chopped liver.

But the next player to win 10+ grandslams?

I'm just too lazy to go to the US Open.

It's not about knowing, it's about hoping; we're getting tired of mediocrity, averageness, and just "good enough".
