Re: Victoria Azarenka is good for the WTA

At least Azarenka is a believable No.1. After the Caro, Jankovic, Safina debacles we needed a genuine No.1. Someone who actually could win the slams and dominate. Azarenka has done a damn good job of that, but she's unfortunately the person people love to hate.

Only youngster (for the moment) having the mental strenght that makes the difference between a good player and a great player. So yes.

And another positive thing, Sharapova, Azarenka and Serena are the top three players all multiple grand slam winners competing for the number one this year, I think that is awesome.

I don't really like her, but she has my respect for beeing very constant, mentally strong and a good tennisplayer.
And i agree with the statement. (Too) many people love to hate her, and that makes the WTA more interesting.

Indeed. Tennis is often like a microcosm of life. The bastards often win and like life itself it isn't always fair or just. But you just have to deal with it.

Re: Victoria Azarenka is good for the WTA

Much better for the WTA than an inconsistent(though charismatic) Na Li winning, then losing R1-QF in her next few events by hitting 1234567890asdfghjkl unforced errors.

Around this time last year everyone was complaining about lack of consistency at the top, when I think 8 straight slams were won by different women, etc. Now we have a consistent top 3, all five of the past slams were one by one of them, all 7 of the previous slams had at least one of them in the final, and there's a pretty decent supporting cast from 4-7 as well. I think this is a huge step in the right direction.

Well said . Although i don't think Li as a winner would have been bad for WTA.

Re: Victoria Azarenka is good for the WTA

She is just so amazingly strong. Both the media and the spectators tried hard to bring a player down the last few days like I've never seen before. The crowd was for the most parts absolutely pathetic, the amount of cheering for her UEs was absolutely shameful and disgusting.

But Vika is stronger than that. She doesn't need the media or pander to spectators....she is here to win all on her own if needed and that's what she did today. Worthy two-time slam winner, worthy #1 and worthy absolute top player of the sport a few years down the road.

If anything, she's succeeding in erasing some of the damage Wozniacki/Safina did to the sport.

I really think you have a few screws loose.

Of course Shrieka has to respect and court the media and spectators, she is currently the #1 player on the WOMENS TENNIS ASSOCIATION TOUR. The spectators in the seats and at home provide her livelihood, and the health of the tour should be one of her priorities as an ambassador of the game. Alienating the media and fans as she has consistently done for years by being a flippant, rude and arrogant twit has done little to endear her to either.

She needs serious media and PR training, STAT!

No, she's fine as she is. PR is for politicians and we all know how boring they can be. No need for robots on the tour.

Re: Victoria Azarenka is good for the WTA

Well unlike Wozniacki, Azarenka obviously has a ruthless streak and some backbone which allows her to put aside any external concerns and get the job done: winning titles. Unfortunately she has won two majors in a city that doesn't appear to care for her very much.

The fact is, it would have been a whole lot better for the WTA if Li had won today. Not only in terms of being the clear crowd favourite but also legitimising a lot of the WTA's heavy investment and expansion in East Asia. It would also have left Serena at world #1 which many people feel she deserves having arguably been the best player over the last 12 months.

She needs nothing, her personality is fine the way it is. People always complain about players having no personality and yet if one does she'll get shit upon.

Respect is a two-way street, the spectators treated her like garbage today. They did the worst they could and still couldn't stop her from winning, this will make Vika much stronger...it doesn't get worse than this.

And as far as the health of the tour is concern, she's actually playing plenty of tournaments unlike some other top player so please sit down...Vika's doing her share.
