If it was never gonna happen in singles and I was good at/liked dubs, sure, why not?

If I was good enough at singles to challenge for major titles, though, I wouldn't bother with dubs at all.

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

I think it would be cool to have a mixed doubles slam in its own right, regardless of what my singles record was.

It's odd how being a good doubles player is almost seen as a negative these days.

Just? I think that is a bit insulting towards the doubles specialists. I don't think each top 10 player would succeed in doubles. Players who are not good at certain things (eg net play) would struggle in doubles IMO. And,not everyone in top 10 is brilliant when it comes to that particular skill.

It is a bit insulting, and I definitely agree that lots of top singles players would be / are rubbish doubles player (just look at Fed Cup).

But let's face it - when the top singles players stopped playing doubles, the quality of the competition dropped off severely. We're lucky in the WTA that a lot of top players still play doubles (Williams sisters, Errani etc.). The men's doubles circuit is a joke.

The Slams have done a lot to screw doubles as well. Particularly mixed doubles - sudden death deuce, match tie break instead of a third set - it's basically a crapshoot these days. And the collective team prize for winning the tournament is less than a singles player gets for reaching the third round!

I checked and yes she was at AO SF twice ('91, '01) and QF at both WB an USO ('99).
monica wasn't as "abysmal" as you think at the net. She certainly wasn't a natural, but she actually was a pretty decent volleyer, albeit using 2 hands a lot. And needless to say she had one of the best drive volleys ever. And she won 6 doubles titles.
