Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?
I think that a player or someone who put so much importance on have only a GS title in mixed double is totally ridiculous. In my book, there's not really much glory to have a mixed double title to your achievements, it's nice and fun but it doesn't make you one of the great for that. As for double title, I don't think it's that easy for a top 10 in single to breeze through the whole double specialist to beat a GS when you only play 4 tournaments a year. At the end of the day, single GS title is what matters the most for a single player and even if you win one double it won't be anything impressive. For a double player it's another story tho since they don't have the same goals.
To answer your question about the timing I'd say, young player should try to play the double events of their first few GS until they prove something in single. If a player wants a GS title, they should enter the double, since anybody can win it. Every years there are surprises in mixed double.
