Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

Yes definately.

A few doubles matches aren't going to kill you. Slams are wide open, many players are in with a chance to win it. Why not give it a go. Perfect example of Sveta/Vera last year.

Errani and Vinci are excellent players to be so successful with such awful serves.

No. I might play it for the extra cash though if I were a low-mid level player.

Spot on. I personally think it's harder to play doubles. You guys should check out this thread: Is it harder to play singles or doubles?

And to answer the question, no. I have no volleys and I don't do well in team work.

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

Hantuchova will go into the tennis hall of fame & recordbooks as one of the few players to win all 4 mixed doubles grand slam, she will be forever famous in the tennis world for that. **** yeah, I would do the same, plus when I'm playing tennis with Fabio, I will be working it mmmhmmmmmm!!!!!

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

Seles was abysmal at net but she even managed to make on GS SF (AO I think, gotta check wikipedia...)

I checked and yes she was at AO SF twice ('91, '01) and QF at both WB an USO ('99).

Congrats Serene Rose Zhang for an eviscerating AO!!!

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

I think that a player or someone who put so much importance on have only a GS title in mixed double is totally ridiculous. In my book, there's not really much glory to have a mixed double title to your achievements, it's nice and fun but it doesn't make you one of the great for that. As for double title, I don't think it's that easy for a top 10 in single to breeze through the whole double specialist to beat a GS when you only play 4 tournaments a year. At the end of the day, single GS title is what matters the most for a single player and even if you win one double it won't be anything impressive. For a double player it's another story tho since they don't have the same goals.

To answer your question about the timing I'd say, young player should try to play the double events of their first few GS until they prove something in single. If a player wants a GS title, they should enter the double, since anybody can win it. Every years there are surprises in mixed double.

Re: Would you play Doubles/Mixed just to win a Slam?

The reality is that most Grand Slam winners are winnings doubles as well anyway. Justine, Maria and Capriati the only big champions not to do so in recent times.

And I think the case of other Grand Slam champions such as Kuznetsova and Stosur is that their doubles slams helped take a new confidence back into their singles play.

Jankovic, Safina and Zvonareva basically did what was suggested in the OP, which only really leaves Radwanska of active players in my mind who might be capable of winning a slam but might never do it. Dementieva is only other one which really springs to mind that could have benefited from the "any kind of slam" trick as suggested in the OP, and she her OG moment anyway.
