Re: Calm down everyone! Azarenka had back/rib problems...

I don't like her, but I think people need to give her the benefit of the doubt. It's possible she really took a MTO to throw her opponent off, BUT it's also possible that she misunderstood the question and therefore said the "wrong" thing. It's kind of pointless to discuss what she really meant, and it doesn't seem right to bash her for something you ASSUME she did.

Sportsmanship is lot like pornography.
Hard to define but you know when you see it.
15,000 Aussies in attendance didn't buy Vika's excuse.

Maria Kirilenko Petra Kvitová Stefanie Vögele
Arvidsson A. Bondarenko Chakvetadze Cirstea Görges Hlaváčková
Kerber Krajicek Larričre Lisicki Pivovarova Rus Šafářová

Check out Stefanie Vögele's facebook fanpage!

Surely if she was having genuine difficulty breathing then her screaming would have been affected. Yet she was in full on banshee mode during the two games prior to the medical time out.

Shouldn't you be happy that Azarenka stopped choking/whatever and finally put away Sloane? You've been crapping on her since she beat Robson.

I don't get you..

Re: Calm down everyone! Azarenka had back/rib problems...

I have my doubts about her explanation, but still, I agree that everybody should calm down.

Strategic MTOs and bathroom breaks are a real problem, but Vika's not the only culprit (to put it mildly).

90% of the critical posts on this topic are inspired by Vika-hate, not any real sense of fair play. If a fave had done exactly the same thing, most of those now vilifying Vika would be leaping to their fave's defense.

The only way to reduce the problem is if most players are convinced that it's the wrong thing to do. It's next to impossible to tighten the rules, because players do legitimately get injured or need to go pee. Until there is some consensus among players and tennis fans that this kind of thing is wrong no matter who does it, the problem will persist unabated.

Re: Calm down everyone! Azarenka had back/rib problems...

The entire crowd on the stand went silent the moment she said this, with maybe one or two people who clapped. Now try to cover it in the press... only your fans will believe you.

Don't blame the press for going over this. You dug yourself a hole and there's no going back.

Hope Li Na wins and dismisses her!

For her own good Vika should -until saturday- stop watching any English language TV, radio, newspaper, internet... shut-down her smartphone (or if possible turn on the 'everything in Cyrillic' option).

I think there is a way to tighten the rules. If a player gets injured and they can't carry on then it's tough. Having no medical time outs will stop this nonsense. Physical conditioning is part of the game.

My first reaction to this was that it sounds a bit draconian. But this actually could be worth considering.

Not going to solve the bathroom break problem though, unless you want to run the risk of players soiling themselves on court
