Maxwell, your scary declarations turn out to be just empty threats...

You really like pushing the buttons. Unfortunately, the rules are so strict that they would have to ban everybody and then the board will be full of boring posts. This board did not become big and popular because it was tightly moderated. Unfortunately, it can be destroyed by tight moderation.

What about these players?! Serena says come on when she wins first set against Stephens, big deal.
Sharapova?! The last time they played, Serena barely even had any come ons.

Dissapointed that Maria's bakery streak ended but congratulations to Venus for making it to the third round of a gran slam.

Re: Australian Open R3: [2] Maria Sharapova d. [25] Venus Williams 6-1 6-3

Until halfway through the 2nd set, I was getting ready to congratulate Maria for her best forehand-striking since the surgery .... then she had to go and fuck it up with that error spree at the end Still a very good, solid match on the whole. This match shows why, contary to a few of the more deluded Venus fans' insistence, Maria IS a nightmare match-up for Venus on slow surfaces -- Venus may have greater raw pace on her shots, but Maria has MUCH more control over her groundgame. And by "control", I don't JUST mean she's less error-prone, she also keeps much better consistent length on her shots than Venus ever did. On quick surfaces, Venus's pure first-strike tennis today (despite serving no aces, she did get some wicked 1st-serve speeds, and she also hit some big booming shots early in rallies) might have yielded more results, but on this surface, realistically it wasn't going to happen.

Ahead of the match, I felt the only potential spanner in the works from Maria's side was her returning, seeing as her 2nd-serve returning was pretty poor last year (see how she bungled so many of Radwanska's puffball 2nd serves in their matches last year) -- but, luckily, it seems she's worked on it over the offseason, as she was slaughtering all of Venus's 2nd serves today 2011-style, while also putting on one of the best 1st-serve returning performances of her career.

Even as someone who's been harsh on Venus in the past, I have to say I don't see why people are saying she should retire Despite some of her unduly overzealous fans, I think she is pretty self-aware and recognises her glory days are well and truly behind her. If anything, I think it's quite admirable for someone to accept they're not one of the greatest yet still keep playing because they love the sport so much With that said, obviously it's going to be very hard for her to get a huge win at a Slam at this point -- strange as it sounds, I actually feel her best chance of getting that big scalp would be against Serena, purely because she knows Serena's game better than anyone.

No way was I going to stay up late to watch the match. I knew that one or the other would play like crap. These matches very rarely live up to the hype.

For Dante, it follows then, that the only way to get into Hell is to insist upon it. One must deliberately exclude himself from grace by hardening his heart against it. Hell is what the damned have actively and insistently wished for.

Maria was playing so well that once she neutralized Venus' serve, it was pretty much domination from the baseline.

Even the pinpoint droppers were falling.

obviously no one has noticed that Maria has been much more intense since the start of the tournament than she was for the majority of last year. she's trying to keep her mental level as high as possible.

OMG, some of the posts in this thread make me want to bash my head against a wall... The hypocrisy of some... It says something about how much Maria respects Venus's game and career if she was that intense all match long.

Well done Mash

to all the diehard Vee fans. Most of them are pretty awesome. She fought well.
