Until halfway through the 2nd set, I was getting ready to congratulate Maria for her best forehand-striking since the surgery .... then she had to go and fuck it up with that error spree at the end
Still a very good, solid match on the whole. This match shows why, contary to a few of the more deluded Venus fans' insistence, Maria IS a nightmare match-up for Venus on slow surfaces -- Venus may have greater raw pace on her shots, but Maria has MUCH more control over her groundgame. And by "control", I don't JUST mean she's less error-prone, she also keeps much better consistent length on her shots than Venus ever did. On quick surfaces, Venus's pure first-strike tennis today (despite serving no aces, she did get some wicked 1st-serve speeds, and she also hit some big booming shots early in rallies) might have yielded more results, but on this surface, realistically it wasn't going to happen.
Ahead of the match, I felt the only potential spanner in the works from Maria's side was her returning, seeing as her 2nd-serve returning was pretty poor last year (see how she bungled so many of Radwanska's puffball 2nd serves in their matches last year) -- but, luckily, it seems she's worked on it over the offseason, as she was slaughtering all of Venus's 2nd serves today 2011-style, while also putting on one of the best 1st-serve returning performances of her career.
Even as someone who's been harsh on Venus in the past, I have to say I don't see why people are saying she should retire
Despite some of her unduly overzealous fans, I think she is pretty self-aware and recognises her glory days are well and truly behind her. If anything, I think it's quite admirable for someone to accept they're not one of the greatest yet still keep playing because they love the sport so much
With that said, obviously it's going to be very hard for her to get a huge win at a Slam at this point -- strange as it sounds, I actually feel her best chance of getting that big scalp would be against Serena, purely because she knows Serena's game better than anyone.
