If for one do not care for #1 ranking. My selfish I only care about titles.

With that said, my altruistic side wants our sport to be respected.
How long are we going to have this constant debate questioning the legimacy of the #1 ranked player and pointing to another who should be?

Don't you get tired explaining to skeptical friend and family (who are just casual tennis follower) the intricacies of WTA ranking system?
They listen for awhile, come back to point out all the victories Serena she had racked summer/fall of 2012, beating the very players ranked ahead of her, ... a few times?
Keep in they only watch high profile tournament, especially the finals.

For that alone, I wouldn't mind if she take on #1 ranking.
It would give me a action from explaining the WTA point system.

Re: #1 Scenarios for Australian Open

The only reason I care about the #1 ranking right now for Serena is because she can become the oldest #1 and that's just another record she will have. All other times idc.

Venus ~ Serena ~ Nadal

Yeah and in most of them they saw Maria and Vika, they've both reached 9 finals which is more than Serena.

Jimmie48 is too good for all of us

Anyway, it is better Maria doesn't reach #1, she never plays well when she is #1. It is cursed. Ask Wozniacka and Jankovic.

But the ones they remember reading about is how Serena owned 2012 and didn't end up number 1, it was ALL over the blogosphere

Because she had an average first half of the season. Consistency is important too, and I am sure they remembered it too.

Re: #1 Scenarios for Australian Open

I just hope it works out that whoever wins the title gets the ranking. They're all holding slams and have been pretty consistent lately, it'd be fitting if the OZ champ also got the #1 ranking.

Well the tennis stans surely remember that but I doubt any normal casual fan would know that. Especially since 2012 just ended it's fresh in their mind, the last few months of the year.

you said they watched the SFs and the F, and Vika has been featured in them more than Serena so she won a slam, reached a slam final, won a medal, and had a close match in SFs in Wimbledon... Great consistency.

And who are those people exactly ? Cause Serena didn't own 2012 but the second part of it. Tennis start in January not in July, go tell them.

Winning 57 of your last 60 matches and winning the most titles AND GS titles WITH an Olympic gold in BOTH singles/doubles also shows great consistency.

Clearly the rankings disagree.
