Auckland R2: E Vesnina def. [6] Y Shvedova 6-2 6-3

Yari's 2nd serve game was terrible all match.

Now most likely the top seeded Aga.

Whatz?!

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

I'm a big Slava's fan but I do not believe that she will be even in top20...She has no mentality..sory..no words...

Not a big surprise. Truth is Slava has been struggling to win matches since Wimbledon. Infact since Wimbledon Slava has yet to get beyond the 2nd round of any event. When she has played well invariably she has faltered when closing it out and when she hasn't played well...results like this have happened.

Slava really is within touching distance of getting to the top 20 for the 1st time right now. But it doesn't matter. If Slava can't raise her game beyond what it is at the moment, she isn't going to get there. Disappointing but things do change and just as Slava's summer form went from very good to there is no reason it can't go back to being very good again at some point. Just have to wait and hope right now.

Oh yes, and I should add Vesnina finished last year very well and it does look like she has been able to take last Autumn's form and build on it here. So well done to her. Elena does have a lot of talent, but like a lot of players, inc. Slava, the challenge is maintaining her best level but one shouldn't forget just 2 years ago Vesnina was ranked 23 in the world. So she is capable of playing very well herself when everything is clicking.

Slava will be in the top 20 after Wimbledon for sure barring injury.

Summed it up pretty well.

Didn't watch the match. But did she play terrible or was Vesina really good?

The match wasn't streamed. I certainly didn't find a stream of it at least. But my impression is that this was probably representative of the current level of both players. I expect Elena played pretty well and Slava, probably not terribly but hardly at the level that is needed to move up the rankings into the top 20. Of course form can change very fast and we can only hope that is the case with Slava.

Lena . Former finalist .

Too bad she ended up in Radwanska's half. But then maybe that's better. She doesn't have to feel too crap about losing to the top seed and she doesn't have the chance to lose another final .
