Will anyone be #1 in 2013 aside from Azarenka/Sharapova/S. Williams?

If so, who and what do they possess on the court to enable them to become #1?

Discuss.

Nope, those 3 are becoming the consistent top 3 that we always see on the ATP tour.

Well, Serena is definitely the best player in the world. Kvitova always plays Serena close and I think she is the only player that can handle Serena at her best, but Kvitova is inconsistent; so who knows if she will string enough wins to be number one? Same for Serena. Serena might get lazy and flop some Mandatories. Azarenka and Sharapova will be number one most likely due to their calendar consistency. Number one doesn't always mean best.

I think those 3 are a safe bet for the top 3 as well. I use to think Kvitova could come a mix things up but unless she's got her head back in the game she has no chance at becoming #1 in a near future.

I don't see Li moving much higher.

The thing about Petra is I love her old school approach to her game. Doesn't get too out of control on court. Just celebrates when it's needed. Love that.

Kerber is at the point where people are starting to think (including me) she could be garner a better ranking.

Errani isn't going to get much higher. Just doesn't produce the firepower needed to consistently beat the current top three.

Petrova is a contender IMO because she's been there and possesses the weaponry to beat any of the top current three. The big question as always with her is can she manage her head.

Please discuss other possible #1 contenders...

For me, the only people outside of the top 3 with a legitimate chance of becoming #1 are Kvitova and Kerber. However, neither of them are consistent enough to string enough good results together and get the ranking where it should be.

If they could work on their fitness and consistency then they could both be serious threats. I just don't think it's gonna happen any time soon though.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Radwanska, based on the points if any of the top 3 flop at the first events of the year she is waiting in the wings to grab the number one spot.

Aga doesn't have the firepower but is a throwback player in her dropshots and slow paced shots.

I think she has proved she can mentally outlast MashaS. Serena is another story. Vika I don't know if we've seen her best yet.

Kvitova has a chance to get in top 3 , but really i don't think that top 3 in the end of 2013 will differ from 2012 , Aza-Masha-Rena might just exchange positions inside top 3.

Of course, i hope no serious injuries will happen with top players next year. I want to see a competitive season

Maria Sharapova
Career Grand Slam Winner
Wimbledon 2004 ~ US Open 2006 ~ Australian Open 2008 ~ French Open 2012 and 2014

WTA Championships 2004
London Olympics silver medallist

35 WTA titles , including 14 Tier I titles
21 weeks #1 player

Key for Serena is to do well at AO and FO, olympic points will drop off. Expect her to do well at wimbledon and USO, so she has a chance. But then again, 32 is on its way, princess will slow down at some point. Hopes she wins at least one major on her quest for 18.

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!
SERENA PRINCESS OF POWER

Victoria Duval - coming to a slam near you
Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

No, I don't even see anybody breaking into the top 3 let alone the #1 unless there's injuries.

This Top 3 is here to stay.

If Serena Williams wants to be No.1 player in WTA rankings, she needs to play at least Premier Mandatory (Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Beijing) and Premier 5 (Dubai, Rome, Montreal, Cincinnati, Tokyo) tournaments to get enough ranking points. I don´t think Grand Slam tournaments alone would give her enough points if both Vika Azarenka and Maria Sharapova are as consistent as they were in 2012.

I've put yes, but I only put that because I think it's an enitrely realistic possibility.

For the last 12 months, Aga has been one of the most consistent players on tour, and was one match away from being #1. People seem to forget that.

Aside from this, Vika has many, many points to defend this year, Serena is suspect when it comes to injuries and appearing at tournaments and Maria will be as erratic as ever. I don't believe Kvitova can come up with the consistency to mount a serious threat to #1, but she might.

The order of the top 4 thoughout the year will change ALOT and maybe one or two of them will drop out of it.
