Best Backhand of ALL-TIME?? (Poll included!)

Ok, time for a new thread in the "Best of All-Time" polls.

Who do you think has the best backhand in history?

Chris Evert:
One of the best matches Chris played, these HLs show how she used her BH to set up the points

Close-up of Evert's BH:

Justine Henin:
Best of her BH (watch from 1:26, the points are mixed up with some of Federer's)

Venus Williams:

Martina Hingis:
(The best of Martina at her peak)

Serena Williams & Victoria Azarenka:
A good chance to watch them both, they had some tough BH-to-BH rallies in this match!

P.S: The options are the ones which were nominated in my past thread. Sorry if there's a player that should be on the list but isn't.

Fan of the Four Beauty Angels

Maria Sharapova (Career High-Ranking: #1, Career Grand Slam ) · Caroline Wozniacki (Career High-Ranking: #1) · Ana Ivanovic (Career High-Ranking: #1, RG Champion) · Maria Kirilenko (Career High-Ranking: #10)

Kuznetsova · Bacsinszky · Svitolina · Diatchenko

Re: Best Backhand of ALL-TIME?? (Poll included!)

Evert is the classic pick, obviously.

But I've seen Sharapova and Venus produce out-of-this-world shots from their backhands. Particularly Maria, as she has a unique backhand if not only for the fact that she's a natural lefty.

Why is Azarenka in the poll and not Maria?

Jelena Jankovic is not on this poll but I preffered her backhand she used to really nail it using all of her body to nail it. I will pick justines based on its aesthetic alone. But Serena's is the best obviously.

See now this is where it really gets tricky, unlike the forehand.

I don't know who to choose.

Re: Best Backhand of ALL-TIME?? (Poll included!)

Funny how people are picking the more modern choices here in Henin/Williams.

If anyone should win this it's Chris Evert. Sure, her backhand isn't the most powerful ever but it was the most consistent. And it is the most iconic. It's funny that Graf should win for her forehand but not Chris.

Here's why. Chris's backhand is the actual iconic shot out of the two. Hers is the shot that's been copied by many generations of players. Not Graf's forehand. Players these days actually still have backhands like hers.

I don't care for nicknames and hype. That's why I'm voting Chris.

Re: Best Backhand of ALL-TIME?? (Poll included!)

Serena can do anything with her BH and it's held up best (well, maybe not slice that well). Venus at her best had the best one but it's well below her forehand now .

It's true that it is one of the originators of the two-hander of course, but by that logic Windows 95 is better than Windows 7. It laid the foundation but there are always going to be better upgrades .

Venus BH was amazing especially in 2000 and 2001
She was hitting with so much power and her DTL was very consistent.

Anastasia Myskina

Radwanska - S. Williams - V. Williams - Kerber

Re: Best Backhand of ALL-TIME?? (Poll included!)

DEpends what you are looking for. I confess I cannot rate the greats of the game of the past, not having watched them much. They were primarily about the slice though.

Consistency and accuracy of the drive backhand: Evert, and she did pioneer the double-hander used by 99.9% of the tour today. In the modern game, Azarenka is pretty good at redirecting pace and can find the entire court with her backhand drive.
Versatility (topspin, slice, pace, not to mention aesthetics): Justine, Mauresmo was great to watch too.
Power and ability to dominate with the drive: Serena/Venus.
Effectiveness of slice: Steffi.

Hingis does not top the list in any discipline but a solid shot.

Where's Monica Seles? (edit: woops just read your nominations part in the op)

Venus anyway. Her BH was ferocious back in the day.

In before the Venus fans start claiming her backhand had "disguise".
