Toughest Opposition to a Grand Slam Title?

I was looking through archives of grand slams and noticed that Serena faced some stiff competition in her 1999 US Open win.

Her first 2 rounds were fairly routine, but it gets interesting in the 3rd round and on.

3R - Kim Clijsters (Would go on to become world #1 and multiple GS Champion)
4R - Conchita Martinez (Former world #2, GS Champion)
QF - Monica Seles (Former world #1, Multiple GS Champion)
SF - Lindsay Davenport (Former world #1, Multiple GS Champion)
F - Martina Hingis (World #1, Multiple GS Champion)

Who else had tough competition in a GS win?

Re: Toughest Opposition to a Grand Slam Title?

This isn't entirely on topic, but I know Serena and Stosur also had huge letdowns at the end of great runs.

Serena's 2001 USO: 4R defeats Justine Henin(future world #1 and 7 slam winner), QF defeats Lindsay Davenport(former #1 and 3 slam winner,) SF punchedT Martina Hingis(current #1 and 5 slam winner) only to flop to Venus in the final.

Stosur's 2010 FO: 4R defeats Justine Henin(former world #1 and 7 slam winner), QF defeats Serena Williams(current #1 and 15+ slam winner, living Goddess) SF eats Jelena Jankovic(slamless former #1 ) only to lose to Schiavone

More OT, I'd also say Venus' 2005 Wimbledon was pretty strong, straight setting Pierce and Sharapova who played great tennis, then taking out Lindsay in the final. Would have been even stronger if Serena didn't withdraw from her 3R match(they were due to meet in the 4r right?)

Edit: Serena's 2002 FO is one that should be mentioned, taking out Pierce, Capriati and Venus consecutively, ie: the players who have won all 8 of the previous slams dating back to Pierce's 2000 RG.

Serena's 1999 US Open was ridiculous, and the fact that it was her first just makes it even more amazing. She defeated 4 grand slam champions at the time and Kim who would go on to win multiple majors as well.

I think Maria's Wimbledon & US Open matches were tough ones. At Wimbledon she had to go through Hantuchova, Frasier, Sugiyama, Davenport, and Serena. At the US Open she had to go through Li, Golovin, Mauresmo and Henin

Re: Toughest Opposition to a Grand Slam Title?

Not quite a slam, but Serena's Olympic run was beyond amazing, especially the way she brushed aside virtually everyone of note with ridiculous ease. It's criminal that her run just got washed into the tide of great Olympic stories, because it was something really special

* 2008 * 2012 * Maria Sharapova * 2004 * 2006 *
* Ivanovic * Watson * BMS * Gavrilova * Voskoboeva * Robson * Kvitova * Mladenovic * Lisicki * FutureGoat Konjuh

Elena Baltacha. Never forgotten.

And '99 U.S. open was tough too.

'07 oz open, when she beat 6 seeds or something like that.

That was the match where Kim caught the ball that was going out and lost the point. That would set the tone for her career IMO - a choker.

Serena's '99 '02 US Opens and '07 Australian Opens are quite impressive. How dare anyone say that she hasn't had great competition in her career?
