Re: Kim Clijsters sets farewell match

Kim was a decent enough major champion but her farewells are out of proportion to her status. She said she was going in NYC and she came there out of practice and went home early. Farewell done and dusted, let that be the last of it.
This exhibition is a farewell to the Belgian fans I guess.

Doubles and Mixed Doubles are fun and underrated.

Yes

We don't see her belly well but there are pics of her from another day, and the belly is obvious.

But I absolutely love the hug. If anyone is kind enough to make it into an avatar for me.. pretty please?

Vee was so nice. Had a lot of great things to say.

Kim gifted 400 000 euro to a good cause and a boy of 9 years old won a car

Not at all. Kim is a truly iconic figure in Belgium. Besides, she won four slams, three YEC's and she's an ex number one. What she has done is not decent, it's GREAT. I find it remarkable that tennis fans are always so eager to make light of the achievements of players while all those at or close to the top have achieved something amazing in an individual sport that is extremely competitive.

Tennis is not like judo with it's many different weight divisions. It's not like track and field where you can switch to the 200m when things get a little bit though at the 100m. It's not like swimming where you can choose between breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and crawl (not to mention between 100m to 1500 and everything inbetween). It's not like boxing with it's wbc, ibo, wba, wbo, ibf and it's countless weight divisions. Anyone who's 'the best' in any of those sports is only the best in his or her own event which often only represents a relatively (and sometimes VERY) tiny percentage of the sport as a whole. But in tennis there's no way of avoiding each other, you're competing against every other player out there. And that makes even reaching the top fifty in tennis an achievement worthy of praise. If you are in objective terms 'only' the number 100 in boxing it's likely that you'll have one of those alphabet belts around your waist that mean that others will refer to you as a world champion. If in tennis you are the number 100 in the world you're more likely to be reffered to as a scrub.

In short, Kim Clijsters totally deserves any tribute she gets for her contribution to the game. I really don't understand this inclination of some to dump or get rid of the champions of the sport that they claim to love as quickly as possible instead of to treasure them.
