Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

Remember when players were awarded additional points for beating highly ranked players ? Serena is 5/0 (probably 6/0 by Sunday) this season against Azarenka and would probably be 2012 #1 in the rankings if that sytem was still in place.

I agree, it should be brought back, albeit moderately.

Anyone feel like calculating how the rankings would be if that system were in place?

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

Because the ATP doesn't have them.

Remember the WTA is a branch of the ATP.

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

Bychkova beating Kuznetsova at USO
Zhang beating Safina in Beijing
Coin beating Ivanovic at USO
Washington beating Sharapova in New Haven
Dulgheru beating Kvitova at USO
Suárez Navarro beating Venus at AO

It was a bit controversial at the beginning by now I can only agree. Too many "random/I don't try" losses these days (especially at the end of the season) which would create overinflated rankings for the random journeywoman. WTA understood that when a player like Razzano beat the likes of Serena is not because she suddenly raises her game but in 99% of cases is the top player playing like shit, so there was no reason to give an extra big amount of points to that player as a reward as seen in Razzano's season after that Serena match.

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

The players didn't like it. It produced freak results. Before, one big win in the first round of a GS could double a player's ranking points. Remember Hingis losing first round Wimbledon? Or the year Mauresmo AND Venus lost in the first round of RG?

That's very good for that one player. But it grossly UNFAIR to the fifty players she vaults over in the rankings based on one match.

Were that many points awarded as bonus points??

Apart from the regular points for each round beating world #1 was an extra 100 points. If that win came in a GS it was 200 extra points.

This was the exact breakdown:

Ranking Pts*
1 100
2 75
3 66
4 55
5 50
6-10 43
11-16 35
17-25 23
26-35 15
36-50 10
51-75 8
76-120 4
121-250 2
251-500 1

*They got these numbers doubled if the win came in a Grand Slam.

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

And when the WTA had special rankings, at one point when both Serena and Venus had them, the WTA awarded players that beat them quality points for their special ranking. Talk about an idiotic decision.

It will be good to bring it back, but the way it was before was too severe i think, make it less points.

It is so arbitrary, hope it is never reintroduced.

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

i guess it's better to have additional points for winning a set even in the lost match

No chance they'll bring this back. Anything that would potentially increase the possibility of match fixing is a definate no go area.

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

I actually like the idea of bonus points. I think the idea of a player ranked #30 would get more points for beating the worlds #1 versus getting a lesser amount for beating someone ranked #70. It really rewards a player for quality wins over just plain quantity.

Never chase love, affection or attention. If it isn't given to you freely by another person, then it isn't worth having.

I agree with this one, fighting to the 3rd set but lose at the end should be awarded with the bonus points.

JJ Keep going!!!

Re: Why did the WTA scrap the bonus points system ?

Too complicated (for the casual follower).
Fluke wins over higher ranked injured/sick/tanking/slumping players.
It did not affect the top players positions that much.
