Re: Which players bring out the best-worst, and make your favorite fight hardest?

Ivanovic brings her best against Jankovic, nearly every time.

CSN always plays Jankovic very hard (probably because she's a much more talented player).

Champs like Benesova and Diyas also tend to go into GOAT form against the Empress. But what can we do? They hit like a man.

I cheer on scrubs.

You contradicted by saying that Maria played Lindsay when she was 5 or so years past her prime and then you said that Lindsay was at her best during the 2005 IW. First of all, their IW meeting was a freak accident. It was one of those twilight moments in tennis. Even Lindsay has admitted that it was a weird match.

But during 2004-2005, even though Lindsay was old, she was playing exceptional tennis. She ended both years at number 1. She made the Aus open finals and wimbledon finals in 2005 (nearly won both of them). So yes, Lindsay was well playing at her near-best I would say.

And lindsay definitely has the better volleys, but Maria has the better serve (pre-surgery of course), better mentality, and she is a better mover. Maria could easily match Davenport off the ground as well. And Lindsay didn't win RG because she was slow, and her groundstrokes did nothing on the surface. Maria has found a way to move on clay, and she has develop a very effective clay game. And as for your little shade at the end, Maria would have beaten anybody during that tournament
Very well said. But tbh you shouldn't pay attention to that Coketina fan. He has issues.

As far Serena's concerned, she's. H2h against Lindsay?! That's a whole other dynamic.
I think Lindsay of '98-'00, '01 even, beats Maria 6 out of 10 times.

The Lindsay of '04 and further, isn't the same Linds that battle with hingis, Vee and Serena.

That's why I still get excited about that rivalry. I wonder, what if anything would change if Masha could just beat her once...but obviously I'm hopin we never have to find out..
'05 oz open was all about: getting into Maria's head..remember Serena came back in set two AND set three. Set two Maria served for it, lost serve at love if I'm not mistaken and then went on to lose that set.

Then in set three she gets a lucky letcord to help her break and then goes to serve again. Gets mp's, but then Serena saves two of them with the clutchiest of clutch play ( that forehand return winner...Maria still must be having nightmares of that) and then of course goes on to win the match.

Then came the exclamation point: 6-1 6-2.. at the '07 oz open. That was the BREAK HER SPIRIT match. Maria won only one set since then.

I think Davenport was a better player in 04 and 05 to be honest. She just wasn't clutch at the slams.

Hmm.....you might have a point. Maria probably out-toughs Linds..their matches would probably be close and I think then it becomes a battle of mind and heart. Linds nice chick and all, but she didn't have much heart..certainly not compared to a Maria.

You look at the listFOf players who bring out her worst and Pironkova sticks out like a sore thumb...just seems so random....lol. But the funny thing is most players have that one oddball opponent who can be troublesome.

Re: Players who bring out the best and worst in your favorites.

Capriati always brought out the worst tennis in Serena. Somehow made her make 20+ unforced errors in every single set. Serena playing at her usual level would crush Capriati, even in 2001, but for some inexplicable reason always stunk it up vs Jennifer.

Maria is just like Lindsay Davenport, except Lindsay had much more guile, but Maria has much more mental strength.
Either way, they are/were both cannon fodder for the Queen of Tennis.

Re: Players who bring out the best and worst in your favorites.

Zvonareva and Li definitely bring out the best of Sam

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

And I think u can add Cibulkova to the list of brings out the worst as well..
Haha so true and its frustrating when i see that match up because i know the result will be a long 3 setter to maria's favor

Bring out the best -

Any top ranked player
A player who has beaten Serena before.
Mauresmo (Serena always loved laying a beatdown on her)

Tough(er) to beat-

Any player with great movement and good offensive capabilities requires that little bit of extra effort to beat. So players like Capriati, Hening, Dementieva, Venus and Graf. We dont really have players who can play great defense and offense anymore.
+ Na in the first category. Another player who gives her no rhythm whatsoever
