Perpetually under-ranked.

Memorable for the wrong reasons.

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA

Rivalries?

The rivalries between who?

-Radwanska is 0-5 to Azarenka this year, only winning a couple of sets.
-Sharapova is 0-2 in Slam encounters to Azarenka (including a horrific beatdown in Australia)
-Kvitova hasn't beaten a top 10 player at a Slam all year
-Kerber getting her ass whipped by Errani/Radwanska repeatedly

Serena has been completely dominant. There's no suggestion of any competitive rivalries at all.

Maria vs. Stosur in Stuttgart. There were others memorable for the drama but the quality of tennis was atrocious.

Vika vs Rena in USO F defiantly was memorable, for me RG SF Petra vs Masha was too memorable but for the wrong reason

This year's highlights would be:
-Miami R4 Azarenka def. Cibulkova (and, to a lesser extent, as its follow-up - Roland Garros R4 Cibulkova def. Azarenka)
-Charleston SF Williams def. Stosur
-Stuttgart QF Sharapova def. Stosur
-Roland Garros R1 Razzano def. Williams
-Wimbledon R1 Paszek def. Wozniacki
-Wimbledon R3 Shvedova def. Errani
-Olympics final Williams def. Sharapova
-USO final Williams def. Azarenka

This year's lowlight definitely has to be Miami R4 Li def. Lisicki

Except for some Finals being one-sided, it's been a very good year quality wise.

It's interesting that even in years with questionable quality in majors that at least 1 person has made +1 GS final going back at least to 2000 (and I'm sure waaaaaaaaay past then).
The year has only been good if you're a fan of Vika, Pova or Serena. For everyone else it's been boring as hell ;-)

Way to kill a valid point. Look through the posted list and let me know who you consider multi-faceted?

Funny that. You've forgotten all about S.Williams getting knocked out in R1 of the FO?

I don't know about legendary but memorable events for me include:
Azarenka winning her first major and becoming the force that people had, for years, been saying she'd be
S.Williams play at Charleston
Errani stepping up and having a great clay season
Sharapova having a great clay season, winning the FO and achieving the career slam
Shvedova's golden set
S.Williams winning Olympic singles gold.
Sharapova's play at Beijing

The major disappointment for me this season was Flying Leaf.

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA

There's no rivalries this year.

It's just Serena beating all favorites + losing to Razzano in RG

So what happens when a friend or partner holds a different opinion against your favorite?

When you compare 2012 to the dark days, which preceded it, it really does shine. I would love to see the WTA market the fuck out of it.

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA

its a standard year after justine's first retirement. serena dominating and the tour is full of useless mugs. 2011 was an aberration in that serena didn't win anything.

If you're not paying for something, then you're the product.

Re: 2012 - One of the Best Quality Years for WTA

This has definitely been the most consistent year in terms of top players meeting and establish rivalries probably since 2006 with (Mauresmo-Henin-Sharapova) or 2008 (with Williams-Williams having a few noteworthy clashes.)

Yes, Sharapova-Serena isn't a "real" rivalry but Serena-Azarenka is in that Azarenka nearly beat Serena to have a better season than her and won a major herself regardless - so as top players they are clearly "competing" in that sense if not always in a direct H2H sense. You also need to look at Sharapova-Stosur, Sharapova-Azarenka - match ups in which the dynamics of the match-up are clearly in flux. Also Sharapova-Kvitova is another rivalry which could be characterised similarly. These are all constant top-10 fixtures and bona-fide elite players, which is important for the tour.

Definitely light-years above 2010 or 2011 where already-announced-retirement-Kim and Li meeting in two finals and "world number one" player Wozniacki taking a set off Kim in the YEC final were the only things passing for a rivalry

Quality is a more subjective/arguable thing, but the quality this year was pretty decent, especially in the hardcourt majors.

Hopeless slaves of nostalgia who don't follow women's tennis any more like AcesHigh will always have something negative to say whether Serena and Azarenka played a 4 hour match in the final of the Australian or whether Serena went on to do in the Grand Slam losing serve only 6 times.

(4) There is no path to victory for Williams.Keys wins in straight easy sets.

Serena completed the Career Golden Grand Slam
Maria completed the Career Slam.
Aga continued to be Vikas bitch...
Kerber defeated both the Williams' Sisters.
The Golden Set.
Serena out-Acing the men.
