No signs of injury until suddenly retiring down a huge deficit?

Beijing QF 2012 Sharapova def Kerber 6-0 3-0 ret.

:oh:

Agree with OP, retirements like that are really unsportsman-like. I respect Justine's game and achievements but that was just disgraceful, especially it being in a GS final. You would never see the likes of Serena, Kim, Venus and Maria etc bail out on a GS final like that.

I'm so disappointed in Angie :bigcry:

Well that does make it seem odd that she would retire, I suppose as a top 10 player a double bagel is particuarly shameful but she should have played on even if the result couldn't have been changed.

What is she going to do if she's being destroyed in a major final? Retire like Henin?

Zurich 2007? Schnyder d S.WIlliams 60 30...being too tired to finish
a match is no excuse for retiring, sorry.

I really never have worked out why people get so much sand in their pants about players retiring as if it mentally traumatizes their opponent is just the worst breach of fair play ever... I mean, sure... it sucks for the crowd to see a match that doesn't finish naturally, but it also sucks for a crowd to see a dull beatdown. The only person who really suffers as a result of retiring without genuine injury is the retiring player themselves, any player who is kicking someone 6-0, 3-0 or similar is 99% of the time mentally tough enough to realise they'd have won whatever, and if not... they need to get tougher and not allow such a trivial thing to bother them.

You said it yourself yeah. The winning player deserves the pleasure of finishing a good performance and we all want to see a match finish. I have no clue why you'd wanna defend players who retire when there's no real need for it.

Serena usually withdraws or tanks when she sees that Maria is playing well enough to give her a beatdown. Like she did in Rome and Australian Open this year.

:haha: :haha: Keep telling yourself that :yeah:

#34 ·
And he did 'quit' that match.....

Hingis was on her way to finishing off Serena with a tasty bagel in their Canadian Open match when Serena "retired" with a fake injury :tape:

I remember a match in Bag Gastein 2010

Sevastova def. Halep 5-7 6-1 5-0 ret.

Halep just went to her bench, took her bag and went away

#48 ·
Wasn't it on match point as well?

#43 ·
I remember Rodionova ret at 0-5 in the 2nd set after losing the first set against Wozniak at the Rogers Cup.
Also Dubois ret at 2-6 2-5 in the final of Granby 50K this year against Genie Bouchard with no good reason at all.
Azarenka has retired without being really injured as well...just look at her Mandatory event results she played this year...highly doubtful lol
