I can't realize why we argue about this all the time. Has Serena said that she should be #1 or that Vika doesn't deserve it? If Serena is not upset about her ranking, no one should be.
That's what makes Safina's comments so puzzling, they don't even apply to the current situation.
As has been stated before, no one, Serena fan or otherwise questions Vika's #1 ranking, it's well deserved and legitimate. Serena has 2 poor results on her season and they happened to come at 2 of the biggest events and that is why she isn't #1 in the rankings and her fans don't dispute that. Safina was making an argument about a situation that just isn't true in 2012. If she had made that argument a couple of years ago she would be correct. It's like Someone saying Vika is #1 because she played 32 events in the last year, which isn't true and truly misinformed, much like Safina's comment.
Also if people are 'forgetting' (in Dinara's words) the accomplishments of Sharapova and Azarenka that's a reflection on the timing because the winner of the last two slams (and the last one especially) are always going to be more highly though of. Mainly because the last two slams are historically viewed as more prestigious and important and sporting culture is a 'what have you done for me lately' type of thing. So whoever won last is going to be the most thought of. It's always tough when you win the AO because many casual fans barely care about it and now that the final is at 3am EST most people don't see it live anymore. It's also very hard with the FO winner as well because 3 weeks later if you don't win Wimbledon you've lost at a major and someone else has won the most prestigious event in the sport.
But in truth the reason why Vika and Maria are somewhat overshadowed at this point is simply because 30 year old
Serena Williams won Wimbledon Singles and Doubles, The Olympic Games in Singles and Doubles AND The U.S Open and now has 15 GS titles
the 4th most in the Open era. That's not exactly an easy thing to compete with in the media and casual sporting fans minds, even when you win a slam and have a consistent year at the majors.
It is NOT because anyone has put the rankings in dispute as Safina seems to think. This is not 2009, Vika is not a slamless #1 and no one is undermining her accomplishments or thinks she damages the sport the way many in the media and on TF thought the slamless #1's did.
For the last time, the #1 player and the best player are not mutually exclusive.
