How was Groenefeld a journeywoman. I remember back when she was considered a really promising prospect for a top 20 career. Some people in this thread just seem to be mentioning any player who ever was highly ranked then plummeted, without taking injuries/personal issues into consideration. Though I guess this is to be expected considering we're on TF.

Excuse me?

Wait while I laugh a little

In her first 3 seasons she was nowhere, then at the ripe old age of 17 she finished the year ranked 54 in 2000.

She then had a great 2001, reaching the QF's of the US Open beating Seles before going on to reach a career high in 2002 of number 16 at the age of 19, before a career-ending injury basically took her off the tour.

Exactly where is the journeywoman there? Espacially when comparing against these 22 year-old "young phenoms" of todays tour, who languished for years in the 70-100 region?

Correct.

I mean how dare she be a great player for TWO FULL YEARS AS A TEENAGER before injury ended her career. Mug!

nobody mentioned Brianti stuck on ITF tour for good part of her career and in 2007 enter in top100, then fall down in the ranking again and in 2010 re-enter in top100 after 3 years and wins a WTA title and now is out of top100 again

Depends on your cut-off for journeywoman.

Schiavone is a solid 15-30 player, who basically played at a 5-10 level for about a year.

Ditto Dechy, but at a slight lower level.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

Sugiyama was always a journeywoman-ish, solid top 25 player until she became a top 10 player in 2003. By massive scheduling of course, and some big wins early in the year.

Then during 2004, she settled back into her top 20/top 25 niche again.

Paola Suarez is a good example too.

Michaella kraijcek

Scheepers could end up being a good example if she now drops off.

I know she's having a bit of a resurgence but what about Puchkova? After playing in qualifying at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2006, she reached tour finals in Kolkata and Quebec City and got her ranking high enough to get seeded at Wimbledon in 2007. In 2008 she was back in qualifying in most of the Grand Slams again and has been skirting around in the lower echelons of the top-200 until recently.

Sugiyama a journeywoman??? Come on, according to THAT definition anyone who has not won a singles GS is a journeywoman. That's just beyond anything I've ever read on here.

I'm pretty sure a significant percentage of TF posters do think that.

Yes they do. In another thread someone said that certain eras would have been the same without the likes of Maleevas, Cibulkovas, Sugiyamas or Tauziats...

Wow, i know 1999/2000 were dark years for me(due to Elena's retirement), but i never knew Sonya Jeyaseelan beat Venus!!
Looking at her career arch and she kinda fits this to a t( though she didn't get 'that' high in the ranks); her first 7 years on tour and never a top 90 finish, then suddenly in 2000 something sparked and she went 3-2-3-2 in the majors, made a tour final and gets inside top 50.....ofcourse that lasts 1 year as she spends the remainder of her career back down the ranks lol.

This thread is just begging for shade to be thrown.

In some ways, I put Cornet here (she topped out at #11, for a very brief stint). Was great on clay at the time.

I cheer on scrubs.
