3rd round of a Slam, Am I right here?

What an amazing event for some journeywomen and youngsters. Seven of the 32 players are in the 3rd round of a Slam for the first time. 12 have been to the 3rd round three or less times. Some nice paycheques going around.

Burdette: 1st time
Hlavackova: 1st time
Puchkova: 1st time
Tatishvili: 1st time
Parmentier: 1st time
Mladenovic: 1st time
Robson: 1st time
Soler-Espinosa: 2nd time
Minella: 2nd time
Govortsova: 3rd time (1st time off clay)
Pironkova: 3rd time (1st time off grass)
Lepchenko: 3rd time (all this year)

- Caroline Wozniacki has never beaten a reigning world #1.
- Caroline Wozniacki has never beaten a top 5 player at a major.
- Caroline Wozniacki has not beaten a top 3 player en route to any of her 23 titles.
- Caroline Wozniacki has beaten two top 5 players en route to her 23 titles (#4 Zvonareva and #5 Schiavone)

-Her fans think she had very bad luck with her Grand Slam and Regular Tour draws.

There's a few names out there that I'm surprised they ever won a match in a major let alone made it to the third round.

Minella/Tatishvilli and SSE/Tsveta will make 4R. Big for them. Well maybe not Tsveta, bitch has been there done that a Wimby :lol

And with Ivanovic facing SSE/Tsveta don't be surprised if they make a QF

That's why I said this is the weakest GS draw in recent memory...

FLAVIA PENNETTA

US OPEN CHAMPION 2015

Thank you for all these moments over the last years! Supported you until your final point!

I thought this too when I saw the draw. Seemed very soft all around apart from that one part with Na/Sam/Kim an even then the non-seeds didn't look tough either

Re: 3rd round of a Slam, Am I right here?

Primarily due to dark horses being drawn against each other very early in the draw. But i wouldn't put Pironkova there as she can be a real good player at times.

As I understand it, journeywoman usually refers to a player who has shown herself to be reasonably competent over an extended period of time without ever hitting the heights that the big stars do. You could maybe quibble about whether this term applies to Pironkova, but I don't think it insults her.

Re: 3rd round of a Slam, Am I right here?

At least we shouldn't have any random player in semifinal. And I think that even in QF we won't see any random player. I mean, Pironkova is not random player.

It seems we finally have big group of top players which should reach final stages of all tournaments. And I think even Jankovic should be considered as a member of this group.

The Brainless Pusher
Ernests Gulbis, Marin Cilic, John Isner
Gilles Simon, Nicolas Almagro, Tommy Haas, Jack Sock
Kimiko Date Krumm, Tomas Berdych, Michail Youzhny, Daniel Brands
Elena Dementieva, Julia Cohen, Anna Chakvetadze

For me journeywoman are players who travel from tournament to tournament often losing in R1/R2. Occasional spikes in results don't change that. But I think it is a derogatory term, though the existence of journeywomen is unavoidable given how the tour is designed (there are only 2 spots in the final, 4 in the semis etc., so majority of players have to pack their bags before the weekend matches).

I think that the term can be used to refer to different classes of players. Sometimes it is used as a derogatory term, sometimes as a sign of mild respect (I've seen articles referring to the likes of Shvedova and even Pennetta as journeywomen, and I've even heard a definition that any player yet to reach a slam final is a journeywoman). Whatever the case, I don't think it is insulting to use this term for Pironkova.
