Re: Why do so many Russians change their nationality?

Kazakhstan wanted to boost it's sporting profile, so a lot of Russians changed their nationality. It gives them a bigger chance of representing their country at the olympics and the Fed Cup, add the money they got, and there you go.

I just don't understand why someone would want tplay Fed Cup for a nation they pretty much have nothing to do with

Living in a country and having them provide for your training is pretty substantial, no?

People also forget that there is no language barrier. Lots of Kazakhs speak fluent Russian, which was the official language of the USSR and is now the 2nd official language in Kazakhstan.

I thought Russians love Mother Russian more than money.

On the other other hand, the American who has been playing for Russia (women basketball team) for a couple of Olympics now is not doing it for money.

I know for sure The Blonde One, The Bang One, now The Oprah of Russian would never do such a thing.

So they can't have dual nationality?

Vinokourov, Rypakova, Ilyin, Dychko were born in Kazakhstan. They are true Kazakhstani, not gastarbeiter as Putintseva.

So much money did Kazakhstan offer Sharapova?

Re: Why do so many Russians change their nationality?

I think Kazakhstan was under Soviet control during the cold war (i might be wrong). I bet all of these players who have been drafted (so to speak) were born when Kazakhstan was under Soviet control

Re: Why do so many Russians change their nationality?

Putintseva's case is explained here: Putintseva: "Russian Federation never helped me"
And the general problem is well described by Nasha Masha here: Yulia Putintseva to represent Kazakhstan
and even better here:
Yulia Putintseva to represent Kazakhstan

Ana Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova, Zvonareva, Kuznetsova, Makiri, Vika, W sisters, Sarita, Domi, Halep, Dinarik tnx for all! TeamRussia
ROGER FEDERER, RAFA NADAL, Delpo, Kei, Spanish Armada
