Re: NEW SEWTA 2013 Calendar - Memphis Cancel, 4 New MM Including Cairo, Rio De Janeir

I don't understand why Paris indoor not moving to post-USO. A European tournament in an Australian-Asian swing is quite weird. Is that because of FC?

Re: NEW SEWTA 2013 Calendar - Memphis Cancel, 4 New MM Including Cairo, Rio De Janeir

Grass tourney in Cairo sounds crazy Its gonna be mega hot in that time of year plus....will it be real grass or artificial grass!? Indoors?

Crazy that Fed Cup week has been moved a week later...now poor Pattaya and Paris are straight after AusOpen. At least having Fed Cup following AO gave the players a chance to rest before next group of tournies or at least have the chance to practise will their Fed Cup team mates. It's especially sad that they've put Paris week after AusOpen...they defo seem like they want to kill it off

Personally, I think the calender should be more environmentally aware...countries in same parts of the world grouped together more....for example: Cairo on hard court near Doha/Dubai weeks. Baku next to the Tashkent tourney. Paris indoors moved to the end part of the year with the other indoor tournies....

AO -> Fed Cup -> Pattaya -> Doha -> Dubai -> Cairo or Kuala Lumpur (seems more sensible than)
AO -> Pattaya -> Fed Cup -> Doha -> Dubai -> KL ------------------> Cairo in June

I wouldn't be surprised if they were put under pressure to agree to such a move, but refused because it would mean their event would fall too close to ATP 1000 Paris Bercy, which is something that according to Spiceboy they really want to avoid. I suppose this is the WTA's way to retaliate.

Tokyo used to be right after AO and the field there was fine so I don't understand why it is bad to have Paris right after AO

I'm not quite sure why the WTA is trying to ruin such a nice tournament.
Having tournaments in Europe improve their attendance/ratings which legitimate the prize money.

Well, it's not practical for any of the players taking part in Asian group of Fed Cup (Uzbek, Kazhakstan, India, China etc).....flying from Aus Open all way to Paris then all the way back to Asia/Oceania the following week for Fed Cup...they just wont bother Being the week after AO will definately affect the Paris player list...

Re: NEW SEWTA 2013 Calendar - Memphis Cancel, 4 New MM Including Cairo, Rio De Janeir

I really wish they would move Paris to the end of the year... not only would that clean up the messy February calendar, it would also mean we could have a proper indoors swing (say of about 3 weeks) leading up to the YEC. They could maybe move Tokyo/Beijing a week earlier, so that there's a big gap between the Asian tournaments and the YEC, then maybe most of the top players would choose to play either Paris or Moscow as a YEC warmup. Maybe even have another indoors tournament at the O2 Arena in London?

Adding in another grasscourt tournament (presuming that's what Cairo will be) seems strange... the fact Birmingham struggles to pull in top20 players even as it is as the only grasscourt event that week shows there simply isn't the demand from the players' side for extra grass tournaments.

Hopefully the new Week 1 MM will be Singapore. It makes sense geographically.

And Tokyo when it was straight after the AO got pitiful fields by Tier1 standards anyway... pretty much the only top player who played it in it's last years was Maria, and that was only because she has so many sponsors in Japan.

Have the WTA completely stuffed up the calender?

I think its ridiculous that Cairo, Baku, Dubai, Doha, Rio and Tashkent are all confirmed tourneys along with about a million american tourneys (thank god one less now that memphis is gone) and yet romania, serbia, czech republic, slovak republic, poland and belarus dont have tourneys yet. What has come of the WTA where any country with money gets an event.
