Should Clijsters play the US Open?

And risk her amazing streak? She won't be fully heatlhy and most likely will dud loss yet on the other hand, NY brings something special for Kim so just being there could really motivate her- hell motivation and desire got her all the way to the SFs of this years' Aussie Open, and she has won a USOpen before on even less prep....

But what is at stake-
3 consecutive titles
21 straight wins
Hasn't lost before the Final since 2002
And has won 27 of her last 28 matches at Flushing

She won't go out on top like Graf(?) or Henin(first time did) but playing and winning could send her out on a high....yet on the flip side, leaving the sport with such a streak is also pretty amazing.

I know what you mean.

Henin losing her RG streak (no losses since 2004 and 40 consecutive sets ) was a pretty impressive streak - smooshed by Sam Stosur (and Maria for the consecutive sets).

Still. I'd like to see her play. Barring injury from the rest of the top players, it could prove to be a really interesting slam this year.

Of course she should play if she's fit. Whether she wins or not is immaterial, the main thing is for her to bow out on a big stage befitting her status. I can see her getting a standing ovation reminiscent of the one Andre Agassi got in 2006.

If she's healthy, of course she will. She's a professional athlete. And Graf didn't go out on top.

She should especially play USO. Her chances on grass are not nearly as good.

Near the top does not equal ON top.

And you forgot her last match, a loss to Amy Frazier.

Of course she should. 90% of her career highlights happened there.

She most definately should. It's been her most successful slam, and I'm sure it's the place she would love to play her last ever competitive match

A retirement against Amy Frazier to be exact. Also Amy Frazier was a top 15 player, it's not that embarrassing.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

This. Even if she goes out early at this year's tournament, it would take nothing away from her previous achievements there.

That, and the fact she's chosen the USO as her very last tournament says a lot.

Yes, she did not get to play too much and this was a tournament where she's achieved one of her biggest triumphs.
