Fastest Jump From Out Of Top 100 to Top 5?

On Monday, by virtue of her and her sister's wins today, Serena Williams will be back in the Top 5 for the first time since February 2011.

When the July 3rd, 2011 rankings came out, she was 169th. Just 10 short months later, there are only 4 people ranked ahead of her.

Is this the fastest anyone's ever come from out of the Top 100 (Top 150 even) to the Top 5?

Career Grand Slam in your 20s? Been there done that. Career golden slam your 30s?
There's only 1.
Serena.

Love it!

Never chase love, affection or attention. If it isn't given to you freely by another person, then it isn't worth having.

Re: Fastest Jump From Out Of Top 100 to Top 5?

Kim did it in less than 6 months in 2005

EDIT: And she probably did it in under a year again in 2009-10, though I can't remember exactly when she re-entered the top 5.

Impressive.

She didn't re-renter the top 5 until Montreal in '10

In her 2009 return, Clijsters was originally unranked, her first ranking was #19. So that doesn't count.

And, as far as I can see, her lowest rank in 2004 - 2005 was 22. Do you have the dates for when she was out of the top 100?

I guess you're not very familiar with the WTA official webpage.
Go to her profile and look for her 2005 activity, she was ranked 133 when she entered Indian Wells, and she famously won it and went on to win the Miami title as well.
And in fact, she played her first tournament of 2005 ranked 87.

I'm not sure that "doesn't count" as being unranked is outside the top 100

Tatiana Golovin, Timea Bacsinzky, Petra Kvitova, Kristina Mladenovic, Laura Robson

she came into Indian Wells ranked 133, was ranked 38 coming into Miami, 17 coming into Warsaw which she held until Wimbledon when she reached #13, dropped back to #14 for stanford, jumped up to #10 for San Diego, and LA, reached #8 for Toronto, and was #4 by the US Open.

This period of tiume is March 9, 2005 - August 29, 2005

And to think that the majority of the points came from CLAY!! Who would've thunk that a year ago?

Re: Fastest Jump From Out Of Top 100 to Top 5?

so yet again kim has a stat that puts her up there with the all time greats. if only she hadn't bottled a few of those slams in her early career, cus titles won, YEC won and h2h's with other greats of her generation put her way above 4 slams.

Thanks for sharing the info I didn't find. So yes . . she did rock the incredible rankings jump in 2005. How did she drop from 20 - 87 in one month (Jan to Feb)? Was she injured?

She missed the AO 2005 due to injury, and she was defending runner up points from 2004. She also didn't play until Antwerp in 2005 and didn't defend her Paris title from 04

Australian Open 2004 finalist pts came off

she withdrew from Hasselt/Filderstadt/Moscow/Zurich with a aggravated left wrist injury in 2004

looks like that injury kept her off the circuit until ANtwerp 2005.
